(NOTE: THIS IS NOT A SLAM ON ZELDA. I LOVE ZELDA, I'M JUST TRYING TO MAKE A POINT)
This is something I meant to draw for months, but didn't get around to, but since the year's almost over I better get it done.
2011 was the 25th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda (1986-2011) and it was an anniversary with much fanfare: there were four Zelda games released this year, Skyward Sword (which also had a special edition), a 3DS Virtual console release of Link's Awakening, a remake of Four Swords on DSi, and a 3DS remoke of Ocarina of time. If you were part of the 3DS ambassador program, you got three additional games, too: Zelda 1 and 2, and Minish cap. There was even a 25th anniversary orchestral concert.
Metroid, on the other hand, also had a 25th anniversary this year with little fanfare, other than a few fan tributes and a V-Con release of Metroid II, there was no celebration on Nintendo's part at all. Now don't go thinking I feel that Zelda didn't deserve the attention--it did. In fact there's some Skyward Sword fan art that I've had on the backburner that I'll be posting soon. I just feel Metroid deserved it too.

Metroid is not that popular in Japan and it didn't improve when it become a first person shooter. The japaneses in general dislike this type of game. Samus in Metroid other M was a woman more fitting to the japan image of the woman. They were probably thinking that the americans wouldn't mind the changes. Now it backfired and I doubt we will have anything but this damned Metroid prime (I hate first persons shooters too.). That sad because I liked the gameplay of Other M.
I loved the first Metroid Prime (the second and third not so much) but I like a good story to go along with a good game and I feel that Metroid: Another M didn't deliver on that.
I do see your point though, most Americans don't realize that Japan is hardly like you see it in most anime and that women's rights along with many other social issues are a lot further behind in the land of the rising sun than they are over in the land of the big mac. Samus's new image in that game probably did appeal to Japan's gamers.

I tried Metroid prime but like I said. I am not a fan of this kind of game. I didn't liked the game. I liked the style platform game mixed with the exploration of the adventure game. I am not the kind that will buy the primes. I will simply turn to other games that give me what I look in a game. This is why diversity is just a good thing. You always have a company that will make a game of the style that you like.
Part of me thinks Nintendo may have been trying to make sure the bad Other M backlash wafted away without drawing further attention to the series. Plus, with the (relatively) recent repackaging of all the Prime games and nearly every other Metroid game already on VC, I'm not too sure what they could've done barring yet more ports and such. Maybe bring Zero Mission or Fusion to DSiware, I dunno.
Just seems like a tragic coincidence.

I don't think Metroid will ever get any more recognition because of the way Other M absolutely destroyed it(in my opinion) The prime games were gaining ground, granted not in Japan but I do believe the series could of been strong. They need to give the series back to Retro Studios and make Sakamoto keep his dirty hands to himself.
I was kind of surprised to learn that Metroid got so little recognition. I celebrated it...in fact, it was kind of reversed with me: I forgot this was Zelda's 25th but remembered Metroid's. Make-a me sad...but then I thought, "You know what fans do? Remember important dates relevant the object of their affection. Know what they DON'T do? Whine like bitches when someone doesn't care for it. Party on!"
The sad sad truth. I use to like Zelda, but Nintendo is focusing waaay too much on it. Heck, even Mario's 25th anniversary sucked. Oh well, I stopped caring about Nintendo anyway, especially after Sakamoto's gigantic failure known as Other M. Metroid was the only franchise left keeping my attention, now I fear it is fading away. You continue to disappoint, Japan...
