well, you know the scene I'm talking about, where Wendy sees the furry and the guy down the hallway? I think it's mostly the "skin" face with fur around it.

I tend to see your transformation/costuming stuff as a mixture of creepy and cute, so I think it's really cool. I mean, any cartoon mask with human eyes is going to be less "adowable" than something with big cartoon eyes. Let's just say. if I were a little kid, I might be a bit unsettled by your costume, whereas I would be all over one of the more generic toony suits. No offense intended, just one jackalope's opinion! I'm very interested to see it all put together, with a more close view of the face.

I dunno if this would be improved by cartoon eyes, haha. Half the time, those recessed paper eyes with the looking-at-you sort of effect comes across as just that; instead of making a connection with the character, you're kind of weirded out by these obviously fake things that are supposed to be eyes. I dunno if I could pull it off and make it work for what I have in mind for this character.
And besides, this character is eventually going to be smoking a (prop) cigarette. Not exactly the best influence on kids. I'm not going to be hanging around kids while being this character, so if kids are scared? AWESOME. :)
If you want to compare it to something from pop culture, why not Gnasher? I was actually worried about that resemblance, because unlike the Shining thing, there is an actual similarity.

I'm not saying I dislike the human eyes, I actually dig that look on fursuits. You are right that many "traditional" suits have that vacant, dead expression. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project. One of these days I will have a Kabuki (jackalope) suit . . . I vacillate between a toony styled one, and a prosthetic. She looks and is built so much like me, that I think the prosthetic might be more "true to life." Too bad my eyes ain't bright orange!
I think it is more that when human eyes are there, it triggers some uncanny-valley responses. It's easier for people to dissociate/fantasize when the eyes are non-human. When it's a fursuit/mask with fake eyes, people aren't as instinctively drawn in to it and therefore enjoy it more. Or so it seems, based on responses to the work by people like duskysam.
Not sure how much of the reaction to this style of costuming stems from a wholly pure psychological revulsion, which is what most casual believers in the uncanny valley theory seem to believe! In fact I think it's a bit dangerous to tread in that direction, since it reinforces this idea that there is a right and a wrong way to approach the construction of frivolous hobby costumes. Often, I wonder how often the "uncanny valley" thing gets trotted out because folks want to validate their very public and often demoralizing demonstrations of displeasure. Or they just use it as an excuse to shut down and not engage. People are so eager to ignore the fact that it's a design guideline—not a scientific phenomenon—when it's most socially convenient to do so.
Ah sorry, I was not aware it was an annoying trope in this regard.
For myself, I really like this style of costuming. I come at things with an aesthetic foundation in TF and I find things with fake eyes more far removed, and costumes where I can see the eyes more vital and engaging in a visceral sense.
I always just took the "uncanny valley" aspect as an excuse as to why so many people were seemingly dismissive of this style.
