I love eels, especially the moray. There are quite a number of incidences involving these powerful sea creatures chomping off the fingers of foolish divers attempting to offer food. I cannot be sure if the majority of these cases are due to inaccuracy on the moray's behalf or if they intentionally went for the more meaty delicious human flesh. One thing I can be certain of though is that this particular moray right here definitely has divers on its menu.
A recreational activity quickly turns from serene to nightmarish as out of nowhere the mammoth shadow of the sea monster looms over and glides effortlessly through the body of water it calls home, toward its conveniently slow prey. The limited maneuverability of the scuba divers renders them helpless and submissive before the mercy of the jaws that part wide, a mercy that fails to emerge.
The creature's thick powerful throat muscles loosen and spread taut, opening the dark tunnel within its neck which, eagerly inviting its prey to enter. Its jaws however does not have the courtesy to await a response to this proposal, and with massive muscles they clamp shut swiftly even with the water's physical resistance.

That would make for an interesting scenario once they are within the monster. It may get to the point they wish they could drown themselves. I think what happens will vary from individual to individual. Chances are one of them will panic so much that they lose their dive gear pretty early on. Otherwise acids may start to sting before they run out of air.
Yes... open water is very horrifying. There is always a limit to how far you can see ahead and around you, and something could appear out of nowhere and grab you without a moments notice. Even if you did see something coming, escaping from fate isn't likely. It is very difficult to turn and move fast when diving, and whilst in a state of panic breathing fast enough to catch up to your heart rate is pretty tough too.
That third row of teeth that eels have... it's always freaked me out a little. I love them though. If they didn't require so much maintenance I'd have a tank large enough to keep at least 2.
This is awesome by the way. Really illustrative, with great composition. :D
The only critique I can offer is that it would have taken the picture up a notch if you had shaded the moray's face a little more heavily, so it "popped" a bit more. As it is it looks a bit flat in comparison with the rest of the image.

More morays
I am very envious of how well you shade your critters, and just as envious of your wonderful mouths. (Any chance of a shading tutorial? You should write a "This is how I draw, shade, and etc" book complete with lessons.)
Three creatures I don't see vore of very often despite being built for it are:
-Morays
-Mosasaur (And their cousins)
-Black Swallower (Fish not the bird).
Morays have the great jaws and body.
Mosasaurs have double-hinged jaws that allow them to swing open much wider than most fish allowing them to gulp prey down in an almost snake like manner.
Black Swallowers put the largest land snakes to shame, really. If there was a swallower that was around 3 feet in length it could down a great white with no trouble!
[off-topic]I always find it both amusing and disturbing how many people are fervent believers in the myth that snakes dislocate/unhinge their jaws to swallow things [/Off-topic]

haha.... I honestly do not even have a set method to do drawings and I am still working out a good solid step by step approach to finishing. My method always changes as I am still experimenting with different things and also still learning. Thats why I often take so long to finish art. What I apply is what I have taken from many different tutorials on the internet.
This is a series of turorials I have recently been looking at, and they are VERY good.

Aah, mosasaur are admirable creatures, through my eyes at least. Since I was a kid I have always loved that reptile. I think it all started from that classic microsoft dinosaur disc showing the animation of the mosasaur eating an ammonite.
I just looked up black swallower and It definitely was an eye opener. 0_0 When I think about deep sea swallowing machines I think about the gulper eel. I need to look up more deep sea monster stuff.
Well, I am not all surprised that it is a common myth, it is rarely stated otherwise. As I grew up for example I always heard or read that snakes unhinge their jaws and therefore this false fact has been stuck in my head. I forgive this in others. What DOES disturb me however is when people refuse to be corrected. Same goes for the cellar spider venom myth.

I have a small collection of chiasmodon images I've collected, some actual photos others illustrations. Not many people have heard of them so it's little wonder there is so little art of them around.
As for other tutorials, have you been to 3DTotal before? They have a host of free "Making Of" tutorials that while not always an exact recipie of how the artist made the image, will often show a step by step process of how they approached a given image. One digital painting image I liked was "The Taming of Naas" here: http://www.3dtotal.com/index_tutori.....2#.TvKSCtX4I90
As well as their two PDF books on digital painting. One geared for beginners and goes over the importance of having a color profile set up before hand and the other for more intermediate users. And their Speed Painting series? It's both awe inspiring and frightening to see what some artists can do in 20 ~ 30 minutes.
Yeah I can usually forgive others for believing in the dislocated jaw thing. It's just a little odd seeing it in people's writings. What does sort of suck is like what you mentioned when they refuse to be corrected or believe otherwise even when given proof.
...You're making that up. ~Sarge

Hmmm two other things I neglected to mention.
1, and less important, I see they finally sorted their tutorials based on software. Before it was all shoved into one category.
2, and might be interesting to you, is they're holding a Call for Submissions for their latest Digital Art Masters book. I'd suggest taking a look, even if you don't plan on submitting anything (From what I've seen in their previous books on 2D digital painting, you very well could make it in)

Morays are blind as bats, so chomping on the hand that fed it is more accurately described as a mistake. However, they're not known to let go regardless, most of the time they physically can't due to their second set of jaws that already has a death grip on their food.
i've been bitten on mistake, but my little guy isn't a terror from the deep...so it was harmless :3

Hehe, yep, I know that. I just added the extra bit regarding the possibility of intention for amusements sake.
How have you been bitten by mistake? Did you attempt to feed or did you get a little too close?
I have been dangerously close to a huge moray once, I forgot if it was curiosity/ignorance or if the current was a little too rough with me. Thankfully nothing or urgency occured.

I own one. but hes such a small species that it felt like only a strong pinch on my finger tips. I was hand feeding him for a while when he was younger and wanted literally everything I'd put in that tank, so it was easier to just dip my hand in and let him feel around for the food pellet (when he knew he had fingers to file through), thats how i found out they prefer the food over the actual hand :P but, their over enthusiasm will almost always land you a bite XD
now I got him in a bigger tank and he doesn't have his monster appetite anymore now that he's grown alot. So now I feed him with a skewer so I can reach him :) however, I keep fish in that tank for whenever they're on his menu again haha
be safe around those morays....they're one of the awesome creatures of the deep and super successful and hunting (and protecting) their crack in the reef lol don't loose any fingers D:
what amazes me the most about them is how strong their jaws truly are. How they can just crush your hand effortlessly
