If you're curious, the guys he apprenticed with are based on real people, I just changed the names a bit.
Little Bob Guttera = Little John Buttera, Machinist and fabricator. Wrote the book on dragster design in the early 70s. Teamed up with Boyd Coddington in the 80s to make billet hot rod parts.
Steve Winehardt = Gene Winfield, pioneer in custom paint. His trademark is fading one color into another. Gene's the only one on this list still alive. I met him at SEMA in '07. Super nice guy.
Rocko Thompson = Jocko Johnson, the go-to guy for head work in the 50s and early 60s. Ended up 'dropping out' into the Mojave to pursue more esoteric endeavors. Like modern sculpture and bizarre new engine designs.
