December 16, 1944, the start of the battle that would be know as The Battle of the Bulge, It is also my father's birthday. My dad said this was the coldest he'd ever been in his life. Buried under all that snow is a 40mm anti-aircraft gun, the dark box to the side is the spare barrel.
I'm gonna post a pic from the birthday soon but I wanted you to see what he was up to almost 70 years ago.

That was supposedly taken a day or so earlier. The fellow behind the gun is my dad.

I'm glad to hear you say that. Way too often I've seen history looked back on with modern sensibilities and much tongue clucking. It's easy to have 20/20 vision in hindsight. Dad said he was slated to pick up a new full tracked twin 40mm gun and head off to the invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped. I've been making audio recordings of his WW2 stories and some other family history. I even got a glimpse of a new tale I probably will never know fully. I asked him if he had time to look around while he was in New York briefly. he told me he and a friend went there on a weekend pass, it involved hatcheck girls and a trip to a night club. There was a twinkle in his eyes I hadn't seen in years and he actually cackled thinking about it.
