Zecora and Applebloom are growing closer and closer by the day. Herbalism lessons, close comfort, understanding. Granny Smith knows just the right thing to do about that situation. And her solution just may be worse than what her family thought she might do.
(Not just my first dedicated Zecora/Applebloom story, but a slight experiment in poetic types. I toy with three types: Ballad (Quatrain of alternating iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter with rhymes ABCB); Venus and Adonis (six lines of iambic pentameter, rhymes ABABCC); and Trochaic Octameter (Simply defined a line of eight trochees; this is the line type of Poe's "The Raven."))

And what is most terrible... Like some old folks, you can't get mad at her, can't blame her, can't berate her into her grave. Because she's not actively evil in this case. Unlike with her son, this is just... Her. It's accidental. She just says these things because it just comes out.
She doesn't mean to be cruel (And as she intimates, she really, REALLY wants to keep Zecora around), she just IS cruel.

Well, one, she has no idea she's tormenting her. She's old and regressive but that's the best her generation can do. Strange terms that aren't preferred, assumptions, the like. She THINKS she's being nice (She's a good dancer, she's fast, she has a natural affinity for muskmelon) by parroting the same dumb stereotypes that some folks in our world might in a similar situation (I wanted to make the analogues very close and clear.)
Two, she wants her there because she's technically a landowner, she has a good job, and she's secure and stable (and older; in old-timey-think, older spouse=more stability, money and propriety.)

Hmm, I guess I read into wrong because I just thought Granny Smith was just trying a more subdued form of nasty. It didn't come off as 'honest' ignorance or prejudice but as coldly deliberate provocations. From her speech at the start to Big Mac and AJ about how desirable Zecora was I thought she was just playing her cards close to her chest.
