Over the course of the years I've known
strype, I've had the pleasure of being involved in commissions with him that are always sensational, and frequently character-redefining. Terra's added draconic nature was intended to imply an austere sagacity, perhaps even a certain foreboding, to go with the general notions of strength, hardiness, and mysticism the species can symbolize. Terra's generally quite a friendly chap and indeed quite benevolent, but there is always the potential for a moment of righteous indignation.
This is one of several formative pieces Strype put together in the process of trying to decide what direction we'd take with a commission that ultimately spanned well over a year (or three) in planning and preparation. The result was well worth the wait, without question--but you can see here where things were possibly going, in the meantime. We were exploring ways to exotic up the plated scales Terra sometimes sports, as testament to his draconic dabbling, as well as ways to turn his trademark sash motifs into wings/blades/general awesomeness. This piece was, without question, quite excellent, but we decided that it didn't fit what we intended to do with the piece well enough--it just didn't "feel right," if you catch the drift. Still, it's an excellent piece of history, and certainly worth preserving.
