The only other interpretation I've seen of this poem is that the speaker is going to shoot the horse down and walking home....his promise being his obligations to the horse to free him from some kind of horse suffering, and then of course "miles to go" referring to him walking back.
Is that what's happening here? o_0 It looks like the bear is the one injured.
