I'm sure there are some animals that don't learn from negative and positive stimulus. For example say a moth or something. No matter how many times you swat it off your screen it doesn't learn. They're still in the process of evolution, the ones that don't exhibit those behaviors will reproduce and their children will be less likely to do so, where as there will be fewer that do exhibit lighthugging behaviors because they'll be dead.

Anyhoodle. The concept is Pavlovian. If you reward an animal for doing something, it then associates that action with the reward. Repeat until it understands this concept vividly. Giving a dog a bone when it sits, as an example. It then associates obeying the command word "Sit" with sitting and receiving the bone.
