OK so I'm under the impression that alligators can sleep with their eyes open and obviously the "smile" is a permanent feature but DAWWW! LOOKIT THE HAPPY SLEEPIN GATOR!

Alligators have two eyelids, as do dogs - inner and outer. Facilitates basking in direct sun while blocking more light. You captured a very good shot of the front paw too, which if you will notice has claws only on the inner three toes, another normal feature.
