Well... not exactly. But the controversial title will attract lots of viewers.
This new page shows another part of Pinton's past. Definitely based on personal experiences and probably the explanation of why I would never be a commercially successful artist.
The professor character is a composite of real teachers I had in school, though the academic babble comes from "critics" I have found in many different environments.
I loved writing the "art critic" part. I didn't need to exaggerate. I have actually found people who were even more cryptic and pedantic when talking about art.

This is why I don't agree with taxes going towards art. If your art sucks so hard that nobody wants it or wants to sponsor you, you SHOULD be starving in a garrett. If that prof wants to see more of the dipshit's art, he should volunteer to pay him to make more. The gov't just gives money to art that promotes their agenda, which is generally even worse than the usual self-masturbatory dreck.
I am currently benefiting from such funding through renting a studio space that would normally cost five times as much as I am paying for it where my only other option would be to give up to get a day job, or somehow raise enough money to build a heated shack in my back yard, and feel that you are overlooking the good that these programs actually have to offer by generalizing the recipients as unworthy or playing into political nonsense.
sorry, I think you should find a private sponsor, or try to get me to pay for your art directly, instead of letting someone else steal money, and then give it to you. I make a living as an artist, but I have other sources of income and a husband with a paying job. If I want to make my art badly enough, I'll figure out how to do it myself. art isn't supposed to be easy, if you were making art in a heated shack it would probably mean a whole lot more to you anyway!
Granted, I have a higher tolerance for art funds if they are kept to a town or state level. I'm totally opposed to the NEA.

I would love to be able to pay for my own space and do whatever the hell I want to it, but that isn't a reasonable expectation right now. The heated shack isn't even a reasonable option at the moment. I am happy to pay taxes as repayment for this opportunity, and offer the opportunity to someone else who wants to pursue art as a career without the safety net that you and I have.
Not funding art makes sense for a society that places no value on self-expression and creating dialogue about the human experience, but that doesn't sound particularly utopian to me.

I respectfully disagree. The greatest art in the history of mankind was made in the ages when nobody "funded" art. The good artists would always find wealthy patrons and the bad ones would starve or find another job.
I'm sure your particular case is an exception. But in my experience, most state-sponsored artists are mediocre. This becomes specially true when artists are propped up based on their ethnic background or sexual preferences instead of their abilities or talent. (I remember a joke that said if Shakespeare would live in our times, he would have to disguise himself an a Lesbian Eskimo to get published)
Perhaps the places where I lived the system was particularly corrupt, but I had to clash all the time with the elitist holy cows who could not draw an apple to save their lives, but were given the best spot on the galleries because they had the right "politically correct" background.
They were all parasitic in nature. They actually believed in their own superiority, despite have being forced into fame by state sponsorship and the fact nobody would ever hang the crap their made in a living room. And they all looked down on "us", the ones trying to make a living by our skills alone. We called them "catapulters" because they were launched ahead over our heads, like if propelled by a catapult. The ones without catapult usually were much better artists, but had to struggle to get ahead by their own means.

Thank you pig, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Sonderjen, what kind of work are you doing that requires a full studio space? Just curious, since most of what we see of yours is digital furry cartoons.
I would NEVER be proud or happy to accept gov't funding for ANYTHING. I will do everything I can to homeschool or private school my future kids. I pray to god I never am so destitute that I must accept gov't welfare, I would rather move in with my parents and eat ramen every day, than take the money of people who have never even met me, don't know me, and had their money taken from them involuntarily by the gov't. If I ever AM on welfare I will be doing every thing in my power to get OFF of it. I want to be SELF-RELIANT, and yes I do tend to look down on those who are eager for a handout of any kind. I might work for direct charity, local arts funds, asking friends to donate to my personal cause, barter, whatever. Or I could let the gov't steal from my neighbors, funnel off a big chunk into their own pocket, give some to me, and if the original taxpayer is lucky, they might get a fraction of it back. That just does not SIT RIGHT with me.
People who advocate Gov't intervention in so many avenues of life, just want to "feel" good. It seems like the right thing to give money to artists, that "feels" good. But they can't see that if they just left well enough alone, individuals would take care of everything through markets and ideas and communities. Right now we are so burdened by gov't that we don't have the money available to donate, comprende?

When I got the studio, the focus was mostly to have space for screen printing, but I've found that keeping up with maintenance for that kind of work is not really something I care enough to keep up with (my printer has broken twice and even though it's under warranty, I just don't care enough to replace it). The expense of the studio is hard to justify now that my focus has shifted away from it.

I do not see partially subsidized rent for a studio as welfare though, since our art council holds fundraisers. Studio artists here are just paying cost, and it's still not exactly cheap.

I never intended this to turn into a discussion about politics. My comic was just about lame art provoking all kind of incoherent babble from intelectualoid professors.
Personally, I don't side completely with either of you, because the truth is somehow halfway in the middle. Funding is necessary on some places for some things. There are places where government can be helpful. I don't have a problem accepting government help in some ways, because after all it's my own money returning to me.
I just don't think art should be one of those places, because the day self-expression and creativity needs to lean on a bureaucratic crutch we will have failed as a species and need to jump down a cliff immediately.

Wow, I think you set a record here. So, imagine a videogame-esque life gauge. Then we get to that boss, you know the one. The one that just has that crazy attack that completely trashes the lifebar into a little red blinky thing. The person playing it is scrambling frantically for quarters and they ain't got none.
Pretty much that just happened, in a metaphorical sense. I... I don't think you get how art tends to work. The stuff that was heavily influential to the 20th century, the stuff that really revolutionized how we view art, moving it outside of attempting to make photo-realistic copies of things... Yeah, sure, the impressionists and post impressionists lived as paupers and relied on patrons to get ahead, but really? Those guys got told their work is garbage. Warnings were released that their work would make people ill and that pregnant women would miscarry upon seeing their horrible brightly-colored canvas vomit. They toiled in obscurity and died poor. I GUESS THIS WAS TOTALLY COOL.
Yes, 90% of everything is crap. That is unavoidable if you pay for it or not. This site basically runs for what amounts to collective pocket-change that its users give; it's basically free and you can see that in action. I'm not rooting for the crap though. I'm rooting for that 10% that makes something fascinating and worth looking out for. Maybe, just maybe, that person who showed promise and could be the next big change to art could get a hand up? I mean, I know your politics are pretty mired in this (which really, I don't give a shit one way or another, politics doesn't matter in this discussion IMO), but you're basically alright with saying "GET A JOB, YOU HIPPIE. CAN'T GET A PATRON? THEN EAT A DICK." and that pretty much sinks the battleship on any respect I have for you artistically. I'm some mediocre sell-out pornographer, and your lack of respect for the arts makes *me* feel like some paragon. Go have a good time now that you got yours, fuck everyone else.

Art is not supposed to be easy or fun or simple. Didn't I say that it is acceptable to look for charity from local funds, friends, family, patrons? Yeah 90% of everything is crap. Why would you think that subsidizing a bunch of politically-correct hacks is going to produce the next Da Vinci? With your attitude, I hope you are terribly concerned about abortion. After all, a woman could be terminating the next Picasso!
the impressionists may have died paupers, but their work lives on and is celebrated to this day. Obviously their critics were full of shit. I'm really glad those artists weren't subsidized by the state, because the state tends to want things that THEY like, and I seriously doubt that some bureaucrat would have the vision to appreciate and promote cubism or impressionism. Have you seen the work that came out of Soviet Russia? Beautiful, realistic, emotionally charged art, all promoting the Glorious State, and Our Dear Leader, etc etc. I just think that taxes are basically theft, and I don't like using STOLEN MONEY to further my personal goals. Am I saying that people should not support the arts? OF COURSE NOT!! They should be willing to do it on their own steam! Why does that make me some kind of awful person? Because I have more faith in humanity than you do?
Not to mention, we have a little something called THE INTERNET today, so it is vastly more simple for artists to get their artwork out there and raise funds. Websites like https://www.kickstarter.com are a perfect way to promote yourself and raise money to put towards your project. But no, it is always easier to let the all-powerful STATE take money from your neighbor.
Hey I'm a smut-peddler just like you, I use the money from selling porn to fund my other art. I don't look down on pornograohers, just leeches.
I don't give a rats ass if I lose one hundred furry followers for my comments here today. I have standards, I live by a set of values and principles, and if that makes you uncomfortable or it doesn't "feeeeeel" good, then may my absence from your life bring you nothing but peace.

Ahahah Jesus h. Christ. I mention that politics is irrelevant to the conversation and you drop a ton of politically charged statements. GG. What, do you *go around* looking to start shit? That was a hypothetical question, by the way. I'm fairly uninterested in talking with you further due to your inability to keep rhetoric the fuck out. There are a handful of good points in here. Shame you had to waste them by losing them in that comment. Actually, this entire thread is some kind of tremendous monument for your entitlement issues. It's pretty fucking impressive.
So, let's just skip the whole mess that normally happens here - let's agree to pretend that we both make a few more charged comments, one of us gets bored/frustrated and decides to leave, and the other person gets to feel some kind of smug moral victory or whatever. I'm late for my noon appointment where I conspire with whomever you dislike the most to do whatever activities you find the most morally repugnant, like, uhh, "Jirris is heading off to have a lunch of aborted babies with Bernie Sanders and they are going to conspire about how to melt down all the guns into a statue of Obama, which will be produced entirely by state-funded illegal Mexicans" it's like madlibs, only you can reduce me to a strawman even faster.

Hey, I made it pretty clear from the get-go that I'm not concerned with being overly respectful at this juncture. That's something we pretty much agree on, I'm just more overt about it because I'm a massive fuck. TOGTFO, go back to the kitchen, etc. add any more you'd like.
What the fuck are we talking about here, people?
My comic was about a pig in a fantastic future universe who went to art school.
The joke was about the incoherent language art critics use and how unfair art teachers can be.
There are no taxes or any reference to taxes anywhere in my comic. Nowhere in my comic is says the art school was funded by taxes and there is no mention to what kind of education system is in place in my fucking hypothetical future.
For all we know the school is paid by robots mining unobtainium in Uranus!
Enough is enough.

I took an oil painting class in college and really REALLY hated it. Our original professor started us off painting...guess what? A cow skull with some other crap...uninspired crap, and then a landscape...which was so boring. Then later they had an intern come in who was a professional artist, who was apparently quite wealthy, and this interested me until I saw what passes for art in his case. It was nothing but paintings of little houses, exacly like little kids draw. I am not talking about simply looking houses, I mean exactly like little kids draw, with a triangle roof, a lop sided chimney...and it really rubbed me the wrong way how people actually looked at that shit and were like ...oh, wow, this is the shittyest thing I ever seen in my life, it sucks so much that it must be the case I am misunderstanding it, so I better pretend I like it, and pay HUGE f'ing amounts for it. His paintings were in a lot of banks, he said, though I never seen one. I really resent that drawing like a unskilled idiot is somehow really awesome.
I blame Picasso for that. He started the trend of making stuff that looked like it was drawn by a cross-eyed five year old kid. Of course, he was a real artist and he could make a regular painting if he wanted.
But most people misunderstood his message as "now you can wipe your ass with the canvas an call it art" and now you can't visit an art gallery without finding a thousand retarded Picasso clones.

The real irony is that today's "Art Elite", for all their claims of rebelling against classical aesthetics or some other claptrap, have become an elitist, insular group with it's own standardized tastes.
So by going against the grain and putting in effort to make a beautiful work of art in the classical method, you are rebelling. ...against today's Art Culture standards.

I never went to art school of any sort. But if this is what it was like, I'm glad I didn't go. This is wonderfully written by the way, and reminds me of a few friends I had who did go to art school. They told me once that I was using a font incorrectly. When I told them I liked it because I found it aesthetically pleasing, they said this was the stuff they were TRAINED in, and that I should use a different font. Anyway, that was my equivalent experience.
I'm glad you like it.
I know the kind you refer too. They consider their way to do things in the only possible right one and everyone with a different perspective or taste has to be wrong. A real artist has to be flexible, not stick to a training like it's dogma.

Sounds like you used MS Comic Sans.
Personally, I'm kind of waffly on this font. Yes, it is was designed super-quickly by a software engineer who knew nothing of proper font design. And yes, it was included in an early version of Windows, making it the only choice for those looking for a handwriting-style font, but who didn't know it was possible (or were too lazy) to find better ones online.
That last fact made the font become closely associated with those sorts of people -- a harbinger of the inartistic and the lazy. Every holiday poster designed by the office secretary, every coupon designed by the cashier, MS Comic Sans was there. This stigma is where the backlash against the font comes from; not from the font itself, which, if you examine it objectively, is actually half decent. Okay, maybe a bit less than half.. but still, at least in small caps, it's reasonably good.
But the backlash against it is so harsh, you'd think it was making peoples' eyes explode on contact. If you post a picture that uses it in any way at all, you'll get people whining and screaming, unwilling to even look past it at the rest of the picture. People have dedicated blogs to crusading against the font. These people really have nothing better to do with their time? It's ridiculous!
To those who gawk at MS Comic Sans usage: No, it's not the best font in the world. BUT IT'S JUST A FUCKING FONT, GET OVER IT.
To those who use MS Comic Sans: There are alternatives. They're easier on the eye, they're more expressive, they're free, and jerks will stop pelting you with bad eggs. Check these out, for starters: http://www.blambot.com/fonts_dialogue.shtml

I don't even remember what font it was, I'd used it to code a webpage with my art on it ten or so years ago. I don't think it was comic sans though. But the idea that someone could be 'trained' to recognize a 'correct' use of artistic expression seemed to defeat the purpose of art all together.

You would be surprised to know I don't own a gun and I'm not an expert on guns. I love guns mostly for aesthetic reasons. And because an adventure story is nothing without lots of weapons.
I am member of the NRA because I believe in the right to bear arms and I love pissing off liberals... But not what you would call a gun nut. The guns you see on my comics are usually fictional ones with no relation to any real life weapon.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't go practice at the shooting range for more than ten years.
By the way, send me picture of your colt.

Actually my school teachers weren't that bad.
I never went to art school. When I was in regular school (10th and 11th grades) the art teachers were pretty cool (compared with other teachers who were total assholes)
The real douchebags were "critics" I found a little later in life, when I entered the world or "professional" art. I was denied admission in the Design Institute without even facing me in person. I passed all the admission tests without problems... but was rejected because I failed the "political attitude" test.

That was fucked up, Tha_Pig.
I have the same kind of experience in art, yet I couldn't get into
the local collage. Too far to travel (even though it was like 20 miles
away), and no one would take me (relatives were no help, and wouldn't
help... unless it involved religion or work).
Still, I keep on keepin' on.
But, your comic drives a point home.
I liked it when you called bullshit to the critic.
And the last panel?
Touché.

I did wanted to study art, but I knew that once I got there I would struggle trough very hard times on this new ear of sorts...postmodernism, right?
Anyway, I decided to study graphic design because that way I would study something that I wanted to do and still get income and because it fits me...I'm open-minded, creative and I know how to express myself with people clearly most of the time. I know that I might struggle with some kind of companies like tobacco, condoms or things that I don't like but that's just life...it's not like someone else won't have a difficult time at it either.

And this is why I dropped out of college. I wish professors would realize that art is subjective and they shouldn't be giving grades based on their taste and opinion, but rather on the talent and effort of their students. Alas, the art world will probably never be that way! Thank goodness for places like FA.
Oh, this strip is awesome.
How do we define art? In my opinion, it's something like this strip here. :D
It's never been easy to define art. I've even dealt with people who have outright said cartooning isn't art. I think I looked at them like they were plague mites.
Art to me is generally defined as self expression intended to garner a plethora of reactions from different people. Kind of like what just happened here. :D I'm lookin at the comments, and boy, did they ever get deep. Regardless if they got political or not, your comic still inspired reactions and debates. Seems like an art quality to me. Good job! :D
I like this strip because I definitely see where you're coming from.

In my opinion art has to be beautiful and useful. The beautiful part is relative, of course, because everyone has different tastes. But the useful part is where I ask "Would someone hang this on his living room?" and "Would this be considered art if you place it in a different context?".
I have walked into a museum and seen a pile of what looked like construction debris in the middle of a room. First I thought they were remodeling the building and left the junk there. Then I see there is a label on the floor with the name of the artist. Someone collected a cartload of pieces of concrete and dirt, dumped them in the floor and called it art.
That's not art in my opinion. Because nobody would buy it and put it in his living room for decorative purposes. Neither can be placed in the middle of a park for the enjoyment of the public. It could be beautiful in the eyes of someone... but it has no usefulness because outside the walls of the museum room it would be a pile of garbage again.
Same with much of what is called art today. A jar or urine, a junked car in the middle of a room, a pyramid of styrofoam cups... Are they art? Take them out of the context of the gallery and they become common objects with no useful function.

This is why around last year, I decided to postpone my ambition to be an illustrator, And develop an interest in bladesmithing.
Thing is, The hacks will either scald themselves with the hot metal, Or make a shoddy knife that shatters.

Notice how some random fetish artist can churn out a fetish picture, And be praised and worshiped like a god.
Whilst people like
addlesee and
saara who try to produce good art, Are ignored and discarded.
