Life for Saara isn't always in the Faster-Than-Light Lane... sometimes its surprisingly mundane. And humourous.

Well, the Wash Post (as well as the New York Times and a smattering of major national papers) is more under fire now for actually playing along with the administration's plans to go to war in Iraq without looking at the facts in greater detail. There's a lot less pressure on journalists to 'tow the line' now simply because the forces that be succeeded in getting their war, and now that the war isn't turning out as advertised, it's forced some real introspection about the way the media failed the American public and consequently the world in some critical respects.
The story with the Wall Street Journal is a bit different (but pertains to FOX). The owner of Fox, as well as an enormous number of other media interests, known conservative Rupert Murdock, is buying the historic paper to expand his media holdings as well as to save the paper from financial collapse. It's a double-edged sword... on the one hand, the WS Journal now has money and will survive now that it's under the wing of an almost unstoppable media giant, but on the other hand, will the quality of its journalism markedly change now that this example of excellent reporting is owned by a company whose bread and butter is tabloids and pundit-driven cable programming.

Just obeying the laws. All street vehicles are restricted to five foot maximum altitude at all times. Otherwise its an aircraft and subject to FAA regulations which are even more irritating. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be from a scientifically super-advanced species.
Rupert Muckdirt owns the Post? Eyew. Had he owned the Post in the 70's, Richard Nixon would probably have served out his full two terms of officed and died an honoured man. Not that I'm sure what difference that would make, 30 years later and the public as trusting as ever in the Bush years. But it just doesn't feel right.
Actually, any vehicle that is not a ground effect vehicle or a balloon and is categorized as a "powered-lift normal" aircraft by the FAA, it is under its jurisdiction just as the Moller Skycar is.
That is, unless the laws are different on Wayne's world where Saara shows up.
To an advanced extraterrestrial race, the demands the FAA places on "foreign civil aircraft" is actually pretty common sense really, gotta know how to fly, needs to have a radio that can talk to ground controllers and someone needs to speak English and can effectively navigate the craft. There are restrictions on where you can take off and land near populated areas but again it is common sense for the most part. If the craft has some sort of anti gravity capability then it might qualify as a "lighter than air" aircraft and that would negate most flight restrictions.
Being an alien representative of a vastly more advanced race, simply requesting an exemption from the director of the FAA would likely be easy to get as long as it can be demonstrated to not be a danger to the general populace.
Being an alien representative of a vastly more advanced race with vastly superior weapons and defense mechanisms it may well be impossible to enforce any sort of FAA rules anyway.

Ditto the later. All the same, the Kjola prefer not to callously override local customs, even when showing off. This often presents problems. Like the time they tried to introduce a clean low-cost energy source, consumer owned. First thing that happened was a demand by athe EPA that all data relevant to the energy source be disclosed. Quickly followed by a refusal to allow the physics of the simple "black box" be known to a people who show such a disturbing propensity to use such technology to threaten each other and blow up cities. Eventually, self-interest led to an examption being ordered by Congress, the White House, or maybe Oprah, but for quite some time existing energy companies pulled the strings of the EPA to obstruct the new technology. (An offer to call off the EPA if they could buy into it was indignantly refused. Why make a gift worth that much to the corrupt and wealthy?)
Unlike most planets, The Civilized often think they should abondon this one to its own devices... its just too damned complicated.
