Back again to my Equestria dreamscape. These are some sketches I have done at work on my lunches. The Canterlot Office of Public Records has been by Royal decree retroactively amended to list one Sky Brush and Petina Pony http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6100949/ as having been born in Manehatten but now residing in Ponyville.
Both myself and Celestia thought it was wise that I change my name to Sky Brush for several reasons. One, Equestria has an aristocracy and some still take things like titles very seriously, so having a first name of Baron could cause friction in certain circles. Second this was a fresh start for me here so Celestia felt that taking a new name was good symbolic act of me putting the whole Lord of the Shadows thing behind me. Finally it let Celestia, Luna and their ministers create a new legends to back fill both Petina and my own nonexistent pasts there in Equestria. In fact they have already given us a fairly extensive dossier for both me and Petina to learn about Equestrian history and culture along with general personal information. Twilight will be privately tutoring us in greater detail about Equestrian history, and begin schooling Petina on the theories and practices of unicorn magic. Which up to this point Petina has just been winging it. This will be on top of my flight lessons with Rainbow Dash.
Now since my arrival and Petina's over four months ago we have been rather floating from household to household in Ponyville with no permanent place to call home. This would not do for any long term situation; therefore Celestia saw it necessary to make certain we had some place where Petina and I could start building our new lives in Ponyville. Also it would let us start receiving Equestrian Postal Service to.
To expedite this Celestia arranged for the discrete purchase of a cottage on the outskirts of town for us. It is on a small patch of land with its own well, a small garden in the back and little barn/ shed/ workshop on the property. Also Petina and I will receive a modest monthly stipend directly from Canterlot Treasury for the next two years until we are on our hooves here.
The cottage is built in the local style of half timber with a thatch roof. It has two bedrooms although only one is currently being used. It has rudimentary indoor plumbing fed by a cistern in the back of the cottage. The cistern is primarily filled from the regularly scheduled rains in Ponyville, or in a pinch can be filled manually from the well. Pony poop goes into a septic tank located on the property. There is a wood fired water heater in the bathroom of which there in only one in the cottage. The bathroom has a tub shower and is only place where one can routinely get hot water from the heater located there. The cottage has a kitchen with a wood fire stove and oven in it and one sink. Also the kitchen has a genuine ice box in one corner. There are two fireplace in the place. One in the main room and one in what passes for the master bedroom which Petina and I are using.
It has wood floors over a sturdy stone foundation with a root cellar built into it. It also has a fairly extensive attic with an access ladder/ stairs in the main room. The front door is in a Dutch style arrangement with an upper and lower section.
While the arrangement sounds great it is not without its problems. One it is older dwelling and while generally sound the place is in need of some repairs and upgrades. First off was the thatch roof. For that we enlisted the aid of some local ponies who specialize in this kind of work. The stallion pulling cart was one of them and his son would come out and help him after school.
The interior was very dusty and in need of a good cleaning from top to bottom. Unfortunately there were also lots of spiders inside which made Petina less than helpful until she was certain that the bulk of the evil little monsters had been banished from the building. She still does not like the attic. Also all the windows need caulking around them bad. Fortunately our first stipend was large enough to allow us to buy some basic furnishing and provisions for the place. Although Petina insisted we get the best bed we could afford with our available funds. Therefore we have a rather extravagant four post canopy bed for such a modest dwelling.
The paint will definitely need some work in the future, especially the floral trim around and above the front door where it is definitely starting to peel. The flag above the front door is a pegasus pennant. It is primitive windsock that allows a landing pegasus approaching the cottage have an idea what the wind is like close to the ground near the cottage.

It is usually just handled under the regular rain schedule that the area receives. It is funny that one of things I still find most whimsical about Equestria, besides candy-colored talking ponies, is the fact the weather is something that you almost can set a clock to. It is amazing how that lets you plan your day, tasks, events with some assurance. Another thing is that the seasons also run a fairly exact schedule which is nice when you are planning on how much provisions you need for the winter.
Oh my. Such detailed description xD
That windsock was a pretty brilliant move actually; exactly what one would expect from a society with fliers in it, but something that's hard to actually come up with just on the go. I'm impressed xD
I am personally a city-person, but this looks like a cozy home xD

Two fireplaces, one chimney, I believe. (That would have been usual, as it saves on the stonework.) Have the top checked for an ember trap (vital for thatch roofs) and please, both of you learn how to build, start, maintain, and finish fires for heat and cooking.
Petina has the right attitude -- buy what you must, but when you can you buy the best for what you do the most. (Sleep, you pervs!) Also, offer what you're getting rid of to those with less. That builds communities.
More spells for Petina to learn: fire starting/monitoring/stopping, spider/insect repellent, dust gathering (faster and more effective than a cloth or sweep).
How do you get into the root cellar? And do you have plans for the barn? (That makes it sound like a "hobby farm." Hm, growing some specialized crop...)
(The proofreader in me clenches his teeth and resists sending a "corrected" copy of the post description.)

Actually there are two chimneys in the cottage. The other is at the other end of the cottage and obscured by perspective and the tree at that end. Fortunately Andur is taught me, in my sleep at least, how to build and maintain a fire. Since we live on the outskirts of town we're not required to observe the traditional curfew but common sense says you bank your coals and put the cover over the fireplace when you go to bed.

Oh I understand where she is coming from. Trust me. But still the bed does look a bit decadent in this quaint little cottage.

Well she is already pretty good at levitation. However Twilight wants to give Petina a fairly standard battery of tests that young unicorn foals take to determine what are Petina's areas of magical potential they should develop.

The root cellar is located in the pantry and is accessed by a sliding door in the floor. It is not a giant cellar but there is a ramp going down into it. Fortunately there is the equivalent of the Farmers Almanac in Equestria and one of the things they include is a table that calculates depending on the size and location of your household how much supplies you should stow away to get through winter until Winter Wrap Up. As far as barn goes no plans at the moment.
Ah, I see the top of the second chimney.
Fire/lighting curfew. Now there's an old concept. (Per Wikipedia, the UK did that before 1100. For a different curfew event, look up "Blanche Heriot.")
But still the bed does look a bit decadent in this quaint little cottage.
Wait until she decides what she wants for the rest of the place. (Tell Petina that she should be pictured next to the definition of "decadent." And I mean that affectionately.)

With Petina's cutie mark (*ka-ching*), there could be all kinds of discussions and speculation over how her magical aptitudes relate. I do hope you'll eventually tell us the outcome and her choices.

Well you won't find Petina's image next to the word modest.

Well there is all kind of discussions and speculation about Petina already, so hey how can a little more hurt.
Rindis wonders whether she might have the talent to know the actually correct price for an item and not what the merchant wants to charge.

And I'm leery of defining a pony's "special talent" as being some sort of vague perception. Now if her talent were making money (and I don't mean creation)...
Ah, you would been handy to have around a few weeks ago. After we got all settled in we realized that the floors really needed stripping. However we had already moved most of the furniture and decor in so we had to move most of it back out to the barn so the strippers, yeah it bummed Petina when I told her it wasn't those kind of a "strippers" could come in and refinish the floors.
I am actually very happy that my watchers seem to enjoy looking at sketches of not only my characters but also the places where they live and what they do for a living. I am amazed however by how much people seem to enjoy my architectural drawings since I consider myself barely competent at the topic.
Ooh, the house sounds like my grandma's old house. She had running water and a tiled roof, but otherwise it's pretty similar. I haven't read your Andur stories yet, but sounds like living "traditionally" like that would be quite different than what we're used to.
A dossier about Equestrian history and culture? That's a gold mine right there. Wanna share some interesting facts with us?

Oh yes
Tom_Clowder make his living doing page layout and editoral work. For anything that is actually going to be printed I want it probably edited. No he does not edit the stuff I write for posts on FA but I know that I can not effectively edit my own work. I am too close to it to see its flaws.

SO AWESOME!
Seriously this has become a great little series, not to mention I <3 your design on the draft pony. If you ever decide to take commissions I'd so be all over having my draft pony drawn up.
Beside the art though, its such a dynamic little landscape you've storied up for yourself.

I'm just so glad that folks actually enjoy reading about general setting and location stuff almost as much as the big boom action stuff I post. All too often with the general public I get the whine of "This is boring, why do think I care about mundane stuff like this?"
Yes the stipend has been very much appreciated and we have also have received tickets and invitations to various events, concerts and festivals in Canterlot. All part of Celestia effort to get us up to speed with Equestrian culture, and history. Heck we got to see Octavia in concert!
Well I see it as a two way street. You the watcher have taken the time to view my work and then taken the time write a comment. So long as I have the time and the comment is written in an intelligent, thoughtful, or insightful fashion, it only courteous that I take the time to reply back. In many ways through these comments and notes I have been able to slowly improve my writing skills. Also i have gotten constructive criticism for my art through the comments to.
