Basically the mouth is just --I think-- two plates of some bendable plastic (maybe fun foam or something like that) attached with one layer of similar stuff. When the puppets aren't used their mouths are wide open. (I guess this would make the puppeteering a lot easier, since it's harder to push something open with your hand than shutting it) The puppet I built is made in the same way, although I had to guess what materials they used. A difference between mine and Kermit is (aside from there being a foam construction for the shape of the head and the muzzle, rather than just a sock) is that the mouth plates I used were cardboard and thus not bendable, so my puppet can't scrunch its mouth. I love it how Kermit really only is a sock with some flat pieces for the mouth and two half pingpong balls pasted on the top... yet he is such an iconic and expressive character. It's really all thanks to the puppeteer bringing him to life.

It smudged a little, but I just tried to not go over the lines as much as possible.

Ah, alright. I sometimes use Krylon Fixatif for stuff that can smudge with markers.
