We've all done it...
You meet someone new and make a snap judgment
based on looks alone.
She's got thick glasses so she must be a nerd.
He wears the wrong shirts so he's not cool.
She's got tattoos so she must a be a bad girl.
He walks with a limp so he's slow.
She's got big boobs so she must be a bimbo.
Etc. etc. etc.
We love to classify and marginalize and dismiss
based on all the wrong qualifications.
It's not right.
Kelly is lovely, anybody would agree. We had a cold drink and
quick hug and then a long conversation about societal norms,
cognitive symmetry, and historical prejudice. Kelly knows all about
being assessed on looks alone. However, with a masters in
Comparative Lit and an MBA from USC, she can hold her own
in any high brow conversation.
Beware fellas, this lady won't fall for your dixie-fried
pickup lines. She's also a black belt in Karate, so gropers often find
themselves kissing the floor instead of her, ummm, cheek.
The point is one most furries know well: it's what inside that counts.
Next time you meet someone new, give them a clean slate
and the benefit of a friendly greeting. Listen to what they have to say.
You'll make so many wonderful friends and the world will
be a better place.
You'll be amazed at how cool uncool folks can be.
Respect and kindness are all you need.
I'm a big dog sipping a frosty beer.
But I'm also a worthwhile being with many other facets to
my existence.
Just like you reading this. Just like every single person on this planet.
Kelly (good looking AND nice) and Dogbomb (perhaps a
notch below average AND tipsy) thank you.

I just hope you didn't pick up fleas from her.
Her background reminds me of this really hot blonde I know in South Carolina. She's got her Doctorate in... well, Doctoring. She's a Resident Physician at a hospital, but in her off time she likes to hang out with bikers and truck drivers.

Let's not insult insurance companies too loudly, friend. We both need them eventually.
On an unrelated note, you should check out the movie "The Way" if you haven't seen it. It's not furry related, but it totally seems like the kind of thing you'd undertake. (Though under much happier circumstances.)

I can verify that it's the suit that is so attractive to folks. I just did my first downtown walk around and in bars and a HUGE number of folks wanted to take a picture of me as well as the other fursuiters! As a human I have poor self esteem. But when in suit it's a chick magnet!
But seriously, that is so incredible how so many, many folks want their picture taken with us fursuiters of all types.
And the bar was so much fun! I don't drink and thought that all bars were dark and depressing with rare exceptions. But it's the exception to find one that is dark and depressing. And regardless when us fursuiters appear, everyone brightens up! It's the most incredible thing I've ever encountered and my fursuits help break down the appearances barrier (I'm not exactly a skinny handsome fella, fat and not so hot looking as a human). We have a great time!
So now I'm no longer jealous of you Dogbomb, but found out that our fursuits are what opens doors to many, many things! And a great equalizer too! I'm no longer ignored as a person and experience a lot of what you do as we all get to do when we fursuit in public.
It is the fursuit that attracts everyone, then they get to know the real inner person too! Being a furry is the most incredible thing! I wish that everyone would get a chance to experience these things!

so this is where you was... hahaha good for you!! i still have your potato peeler here.
i do my best to be polite to others. but i do seem to get those that dont care how they treat you. its hard to weed those out from the start. thats what hurts when its to late. i'm still trying to figure out if i am to nice or should i be the not so nice as i was before person.
i want to be me, and only me being me. take me as i am. not use me for who i am, a generous furson.
i find dogbomb a very special fur with alot of wisdom. thank you dogbomb for your friendship.

fursuit are basically an icebreaker, perfect for starting a conversation with a total stranger. one little thing i was wondering, will we ever see videos from your escapades? (i want to see dogbomb dancing, come on you can't be that bad, even the robot, or the currently popular shuffle :D )
Very good life advice there to be sure.
I was raised to not ever assume anything. That included anything about people. I would have missed a lot of really wonderful friendship opportunities had I made assumptions...
:)
*hugs*
BTW, Did she get the fleas taken care of? *giggles* Sorry, couldn't resist. :P

Another notch on the ol' wisdom belt for dogbomb. :)
Part of getting to know people involves talking to them, which you seem to be very good at. However, talking to people can sometimes be one of the scariest things a person can possibly do. Another key lesson to learn from this would be: Don't be afraid to talk to people. That one person in the corner looking at you may not be staring because they think you're strange, they may have had a hard day and may want an ear, fuzzy or no, to listen to. Communication is one of the blessings of our species, and you never know; you may make a new friend in the process. What's the worst they can say: "No, I don't want to talk right now?"
Never pass up an opportunity to make a new friend. There are so many stories in the world that deserve to be told...all you have to do is listen.

Wonderful, positive perspective, my dear bomb! It's a pleasure watching you interact with others and finding these lovely surprises along the way!
I hope to be as lucky and well received when my costume comes together, AND to make the most out of it and not be afraid.
In any which case, you are awesome, my friend.

*waggwagg* One of the great things about furry is that for the most part everyone is very excepting and a lot of the social norms when it comes to judgment are put aside. People I find within furry are given the chance to prove themselves regardless of how they look or how they dress and people are indeed mostly judged on character vs rather "human" stereotypes. Blessed are we to have sheppies like you to remind us about how special furry is.
Good on you for bringing this discussion into the lite and good on you for liking beer and being the fantastic marfleshep you are! For these things, I give you the catchy bass guitar lines and competent drumb work of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrkvAU7-AGA&feature=autoplay&list=PL63D58CD0804E471D&lf=results_main&playnext=2
Stay furry (And thirsty) sweet shep. *hugs*

Thank you, my friend!
Love the bass guitar, that got my furry butt shaking this morning.
You, of anybody that I know, really embody the accepting side of furry.
You have a kind word for everyone and there are no strangers to Waggable.
Thank you for making the fandom more fun! (and moist)

Before I was a part of the fandom I used to be judgmental and scynical. I used to judge by looks, be sickened by the idea of homosexuality, I even judged others in my church as to how stuck up they were.
A combination of maturing, my parents divorce, and being a part of this thing we call furry, has caused me to be so much more open minded and kinder. I have yet a long way to go, but they say that practice makes perfect.
It's always nice to see these and read the journals, keep it up X3 *hugs*

Thank you so much for your comment!
And trust me, we've all got a long way to go.
Being friendly and non-judgemental takes practice every day.
I'm sure you will agree that life is far happier for all when we
act to include rather than exclude. I'm so glad you are able to see
that and that you are part of this fandom.
Thank you for being tolerant and open minded.

After reading your posts all the time, I look forward to being able to meet you at a convention some time. Beware of either a random fat guy, holding a camera and shouting "Dogbomb," then pretending to not be the one who shouted it. Or a fat gray wolf (if I am lucky enough to have my own fursuit by then), pretending to be not paying attention, and trying to imply "innocent whistling" even though that can not be portrayed through a fursuit. In either case, it will most likely be me.
Sounds like I couldn't hold my own in a conversation with her. You two surprise me with your wisdom.
What threw me was the earrings. I make my judgments on what is personal choice not environmental or genetic. She has less control over the shirt on her back or the circumference of her hips than she does the piercings on her person.

Yes, and you make an excellent point.
She wears the earrings because she likes how they look, not
to define her character. The same is true for most of us. The
choices that we make in our outward appearance mainly stem from
our desire to express oursleves and to be an individual.
Thank you for your wonderful comment!

its partly your kind words and inspiration that keep me in this fandom <3 -hugs- thanks for being such a vital staple in the furry world...
and you're correct. We judge people without even saying hello to them. Why can't we just talk to them and see what kind of people they are. We may be stumbling onto new long-time friends.

I'm glad that people still are preaching "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover". While it's an age old message, sometimes people seem to forget it. Thank you for reminding us all of something we shouldn't forget! ^^
And it's great that you had such a wonderful conversation at the bar! :3
