I openly admit I am on ESA and Disability living allowance here in the UK, but I ALWAYS make sure I have enough for my rent, food and vitals like cleaning stuff before I consider art or luxury items.. yet so many people on job seekers and other benefits spend it all on art n then whine when they have no food >.< it's irritating
I hear you, and salute you for showing you try to make good use of the money you manage to get. Another example are some immigrants from northern Somalia, living on the sympathies for the terrible situation in southern Somalia that's bad enough for people not to be able to move away from there, while northern Somalia is about on the standard of the capital region of Kenya, which is quite feasible and even nice for living. They're allowed government support and free living arrangements, then also get support for having difficulties getting jobs, while they actually do black (beneath the counter) work. Suddenly these immigrants are buying expensive clothes, cars and phones. Of course, this isn't that common, but enough to be quite disturbing. My source of information is a friend who's an active brother in the Finnish Islam church society after he switched to that religion, who's discussed this issue of poor image with his brothers of the society. Hell, some who are guilty of this shit have openly told him, laughingly.
Shit, now I wrote too much....

I admit on occasion I have spent a little too much on luxury items like my warhammer, but building and painting is one of the few things that keeps me sane some days so at times it could be concidered a theraputic aid.. but even then, I've never gone without food, shelter or the ability to clean myself like some people do these days.. and I always make sure I balance out my funds the following payment.
HAH! Well spoken! Liberalism should allow us at least the freedom of not having to wipe the asses of those too lazy or stupid to arrange it for themselves. Those genuinely not able to contribute to themselves or others out of no fault of their own should get cut slack, naturally, but those who could yet don't... Yeah.
I was had once by Allen, and Its left a bad taste in my mouth ever since. There've been others but no-one nearly as bad. I dont mind if people BUY things from me like charms or what not if they're in such a situation but commissions are not the same as a $5 charm or a $20 sewn marker case. I can't stop people from buying merch, but in the case of commissions.... its a more personal and more expensive endevour which makes me... *arg*
I feel your pain. it's why I choose not to do commissions :P
still the 'buyers' who do this always feel to me like they have a right to try and guilt you into doing cheaper or free stuff. I find it quite insulting sometimes when some people have asked me or simply just demanded free art (happened a few times). The point of fact is that some use their art as a source of income, so cheapening the service looses one; your credibility, and two; devalues your work past and present as a whole. Artists and designers charge what they do for a reason, and I don't think it's unfair for the client to pay the asking price. You have my support.

I see this far too often. I've known folks locally that would spend more time trying to buy stuff like art, suits, electronics, etc than working on the things that are preventing them from getting a job and off the govt check. One local fur that moved out to live with family took all his time and effort after losing his SSI check on trying to get it back and had no money for food or anything else because he blew it on luxuries. The tighter the budget is, the more folks should be saving for that rainy day instead of buying stuff.
At the same time, it's hard to break spending habits. Even with a really good job and income, I should be tightening the belt and not spending on luxuries given my upcoming move costs. Instead I've been buying more fursuits and things. It's nice to see fun art reminders that make me look at my own spending habits sometimes too :P *giggles*
I may make it back to US cons sometime in the next couple of years and would love to commission ya again :)

New art post: "Hey! Check out this awesome commission of badger X fox X kitty pron that Supertalentedartist29 drew for me! Isn't it rad?"
New Journal post: "So, just got evicted by my lowlife landlord. Apparently being 5 months in the rear for rent isn't tolerated for long. I just don't get it. I mean, I'm such a super special snowflake, why won't he give me another month?! Anyways, plz comission me, so I can buy food and stuff to live..."
Yes Fox, I definitely understand why this is irksome.
*Note, apologies to anyone who named them self supertalentedartist29, though frankly you probably had it coming.

. . . then there's me, who squeezed $10 out of my "sanity fund" which I set for myself while unemployed for a card now and then. Usually this is accrued for a game I want at the end of the year or something but . . .
I wanted teh artz cardz instead. And I was very careful not to . . . you know, spend enough to break me :P (Plus, knowing me, I would have blown it on chips, jerky, or something else which only gives momentary pleasure rather than looking at the cards and having character pictures for some of my regulars and two underused ones.)

Reminds me of an old episode of The Cosby Show I caught on reruns sometime in the last couple years. He had a classroom full of like "ghetto blacks" (if you'll pardon the term), and was basically teaching a special class on, y'know, managing life. And he was a little hesitant to go in there.
During the discussion, he happened to mention seeing "a lot of nice shoes in here".
I get the feeling they're not allowed to air that episode anymore. It'd wake a lot of people up to how screwed up their priorities are.

Totally agree with you on this one I'm on goverment aid and I only commission artist when I know Im taken care of or when I can find a job that pays me with no paper trails. (live with my father so its a not all bad) People need to learn to use there cash wisely in these situations and acting like this in the long run stops them from making dumbass situations.
