#65 in my ArtRage challenge, for
twitch_cattz! This was one of the ones I had to do a second time, after losing the first draft to a hard drive crash... but I ended up liking the second go better, and spending waaay too long on the background to boot. ;3
Currently CLOSED for these - watch my journal for announcements about when I'm open!

It's not about the fandom, it's about genetics. :) Calico-Cats are 98% female and the more than rare male ones are 99,9% sterile. I used to breed cats once, so I know. But wikipedia has it in detail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calico_cats
I think it's a beautiful character and of course there are many odd fursonas put there, mine included that do not base on real genetics. But I one takes a color pattern that basically is present in nature, I can't supress the notion of being amused that it implies infertility. On the other hand infertility doesn't mean impotence, so who knows? ;) Maybe he is happy he cannot reproduce but still having fun.

my guess would be that the person just likes the look of that colour combination, and chose not to factor in the genetic issue. ofcourse i cannot say for sure, and it may well be a purposeful use. but i just figure it's a fantasy character they were having fun with. i know i wouldn't let it get in the way of what would be my true character choice. afterall, i'd have already stepped over the reality boundary a long time ago when choosing to design a furry character in the first place.
Fantasy does always relate to reality, otherwise it would be surreal or abstract. So everybody has to make up for themselves where they cut a line, here. I try to make up anthro anatomy, for example, that at least might work, derivating it from real anatomy. And it's the same with genetics for me. It does matter to a certain extend. At least to me. :) When I break the rules of reality on a character design, it always matters and has meaning, at last. There's a reason why my character dapples from red to black, for example and not vice versa and there's also a reason for him to be blood red, and not a normal red roan. And no, this reason is not in genetics, but it's more complicted than: I liked it that way. I like to look for deeper meaning in the written word and also drawings, so also in character designs.
But everybody is - of course - allowed to have their own opinion on this. Mine won't change, though. I think it's funny. ^^

sure, but i don't think everyone need to put either literal meaning into every aspect, or be thought as weird for not using the reasoning of others. they may well have personal meaning behind their choice or perhaps just aesthetic preference. now i'm not really meaning to sound snippy or anything, as i very much doubt you intended to be rude at all, but there is something about commenting on a piece only to say you find someone's character choice funny that strikes me as a little odd in itself.
that said i do like meaning behind things, and i think it's great if you do put the extra thought into a character. i don't believe i know the meaning behind your character. with my character, there is no true meaning behind any aspect beyond my own feelings; mostly it's a personal connection to certain animals or colours, and in some cases, mere aesthetic preference; but for me, it's just a bit of fun. i am sure alot of people don't like my character, and think it either unimaginative or silly; which is fine. but i guess i'd just hate for anyone to feel put off their true choice because of someone else's feelings / judgement. i've seen a few people on here who end up with a bit of an identity dilemma in regards to their "fursona", because they are overly concerned about the thoughts of others. so i think it bothers me a little when people pick up on things that are likely personal to the individual, incase it comes off somehow insulting. especially if it's something they get alot, and if no other comments are given. i will admit that i did double check the gender of the calico cat character myself when i first looked, as i also associate them with being female, and i just knew people were going to make comment. i know i'm just babbling at this stage. i guess i just think the more text i use, the less aggressive i come across
heh, i was sure you didn't meant to come off that way; just figured i'd mention that it might seem it by mistake. i guess i've just seen alot of comments lately with people picking up on the lack of realism in characters and such things, and i guess i'm just becoming sensitive to it or something. i'll be quiet now, too much text already.
