On messenger I'd probably be more like "Hi" or "good afternoon/evening" then wait a bit, if no reply then I'll try one more time, if o response then I'll assume you'd be busy or just afk and leave it at that.
But I guess by this example you mean the people that just keep poking you pretty much non-stop?

pretty much people and entitlement issues. I wouldnt mind if i had something to talk about or if people were polite
but often i get "HIE, entertain me!" "nooo?" "why not?" "im... busy?" "then why are you online?" "..... i dont know..." "your boring" "just to stupid people"

Yeah, I guess some people just can't take a hint.
Guess sometimes it can pay to have an alternate "secret" messenger or username reserved only to friends and certain customers.

I restrict my list personally, and have it flagged that only the people on it can contact me.

It really makes my life a lot easier and then I can be visible without being hounded.

I mean, I can understand if it's someone you've known for a while and become comfortable with.
But it sounds more like just random fans are popping up with that, which is terribly bad manners, insulting even!

yes people have actually said that to me. and yes ive probably known them for a full 15 minutes before they say that to me. Its something that makes me... >.< because i try very hard to keep up a professional, kind, welcoming exterior to the masses. sadly alot of people take advantage of it by making me feel obligated to chat.

I've seen this a few times and I still dont get it. Maybe you can explain. Why do this at all? Why not have all those annoiying people removed or blocked from your friends list? If you need an official business chat and a casual friend chat, they take 5 minutes to create.

There is one friend who does the offline thing this. One who sets status to busy and only ever replies with "Doing something important" if at all. A third who flat ignores all chat with rare exceptoin. Why have it at all then?

im a scatterbrained individual who likes to talk to people on my own time. i need everything in one place or it litterally becomes out of sight out of mind.

yahoo is also one of those chats that you cant actively block people while they're still on your list. if i delete someone just to clean out how many contacts i have that i never talk too odds are those people still have me on thier lists so if im set to online im sudenly bombarded by people i either forgot to block or diddn't bother to. theres others ive added that im just waiting to "grow up" perse in hopes that more intelligent conversation can happen.

Theres reasons to have chat with rare exception, could be a mental packrat who needs to have everything in one place and never delete anything. I wouldnt criticize anyone for thier chat practices. I won't say i blame this on artistic prowess but I'm more often to be pestered by "fans" who just want to be random and annoying. I try not to block them because that would be mean, and in time they may grow up to be better conversing individuals. People who get blocked are usualyl the ones who trying to sexually harrass me over the net, or bully me in some fashion. Im not a block-happy person.
