Artem decided I didn't have a hand study for the exhibition, made me do another one. I feel sorry for Nicola who had to endure this pose, he could stand it maybe 30 minutes at the time.
Total time is about 5 hours.
tip of the day: think about the shape of your white areas, "draw" them with your blacks (and with your eraser of course), they have to have fairly simple silhouettes. All the gnarly little details have to tie into the big forms, after all.
Another cool thing this classic drawing has made me think about is how we render everything now. In this image I spent the most focus on the knuckle of the pinky, while the rest tapers off and becomes looser and with less contrast (this is consistent with that gradient shading tutorial actually). But I guess us amateur digital artists aren't the best place to look for composition! It's definitely something I'll keep in mind.

2B pencils (and a 2B crayon I can lay flat to block in stuff like the nearly invisible ball he is holding). When I adjusted the contrast after scanning it got much more yellow, I guess that's the charcoal look? The original seems a bit more white and grey.
I'm not fond of charcoals and pastel, I choose 2B graphite because it can be erased sharply if needed (to clean up or draw with the eraser). Other than that I think they have an iffy dry texture.
