You can get pretty far in the first game without a sword. The moblins give you the rupees you need to get a candle, which you can use to kill weak enemies to get more stuff, up to and including a bow & arrow and some bombs. With that, you can clear many of the challenges. I made it to level 6 and barely managed to blow up the wizrobes and other enemies in the room, only to get bumped by a bubble and knocked into a like-like. Arrows shoot from outside the sprite, so they don't hurt or touch it. I was out of bombs, the blue candle was spent. All other enemies are dead, so nothing can hurt you, but you can't escape either. It's not exactly game-over, unless you count sitting around inside a like-like as playable.
