BABYSITTER AND BABYSAT

Meghan DeCinder was practically a blur as she dashed about trying to make sure she had everything. “Water, stopwatch, burn heal…” She mumbled as she rifled through her duffel bag. “Looks like I’ve got everything for practice.” Just then the doorbell rang. “Hmm, just in time too. Maggie!” She called for her little sister. “Your baby-sitter’s here!”
When Meghan opened the door she found René standing in the doorway, fiddling with the strap of his book bag. “Hey,” She smiled. “Come on in. Maggie’s expecting you.”
“Hope she likes me.” René answered as he walked in and took a look around.
“Thanks again for agreeing to babysit.” Meghan said. “This means I can squeeze in one more practice before our match against Team Pearl. And don’t worry Maggie will like you just fine.”
“Anytime.” René shrugged. “So where is the little—OOOF!” Meghan whirled around just in time to see Maggie tackle René and knock him to the floor.
“Maggie,” Meghan reproached her. “Don’t tackle your babysitter. It’s not nice…”
“It’s all right.” René wheezed as Maggie sat on his stomach. “Cute kid.” Maggie giggled.
“He’s funny, Meg.”
“Yes he is sweety.” Meghan grinned as she picked Maggie off René’s prone form. “He’s also nice which is why he’s watching you this afternoon. I want you to be good for him until I get back. Okay?”
“Okay.” Maggie nodded.
“Good.” Meghan turned to René. “I’m going to back in time for dinner, so you can give her a snack to tide her over. Her homework’s done, I’ll give her a bath later tonight, and the emergency numbers including my cell phone are on the fridge. If you need anything call me. Have a good time you two!” She waved as she headed out the door.
After Meghan left René looked down at Maggie. “So what do you want to do first, squirt?”
“I not a squirt! I’m a Magby.” Maggie protested, placing her hands on her hips.
“Sorry.” René apologized. “What can I do to make it up to you?”
“I wanna play!” Maggie said as she grabbed René by the hand and started running to her room (René had to stoop down low in order for her to maintain her grip). “Tea party?” She asked as she ushered him into her room.
“Why not?” René agreed as he allowed himself to be shown to a little pink chair (he practically had to fold his knees above his head to fit into it) and waited while Maggie picked up some of her stuff toys and put them in seats around the table, saving the last seat for herself.
“There! Do you want some tea?” She asked as she poured an empty teapot into a cup.
“Please.” René smiled.
“One lump or two?”
“Two. Can I bring someone to the party?” René asked as he reached into his bag.
“’a course! Who?” Maggie asked eagerly. René pulled out a little stuffed growlithe.
“Meet Rosa.” He grinned as he sat her down between a stuffed snorlax and a pidgey.
“She’s so pwetty!” Maggie cooed. “Can I hold her?” René nodded.
“Just please be careful. She was a gift.”
“I promise.” Maggie chirped as she hugged Rosa against her chest. “She’s soft and cuddly! Is she really yours?”
“Yep. I’ve had her since I was your age.” René told her.
“Wow! Meghan gave me all of her old toys.” She pointed at several of the stuffed plushies. “These used ta be hers.”
“Meghan’s really nice.” René observed.
“Yeah, but you know what?” Maggie asked.
“What?”
“Can I tell you a secret?” She asked in a hushed tone. René nodded and leaned over so she could whisper in his ear. “Meghan can be bossy sometimes.”
“Yeah, Meghan is a bit bossy.” René laughed. “But she’s really cool too. She teaches me stuff so I can lead my team better. You’re lucky. I wish I had a big sister like Meghan.”
“Don’t you got no sisters?” Maggie asked. René shook his head, a touch sadly. “That’s tewibble! You know what?”
“What?” René asked amused at how often she asked that.
“I’ll be your sister!” Maggie giggled as she gave René a hug.
“Awww….” René said as he hugged her back. “You’re sweet. Come on let’s go spoil your dinner. But it’ll be our little secret, okay?”
“Okay.” Maggie laughed as she climbed up on his shoulders. “To da kitchen!”
“To the kitchen!” René shouted. “Charge!” Running at a brisk pace—really more of a fast walk—René brought Maggie to the kitchen and made them both some sandwiches. “Peanut butter and jelly okay?” He asked her.
“Sure!” Maggie replied as she climbed into a chair. René brought her a plate with her sandwich and a glass of milk. René was about to sit down to join her when Maggie piped up. “Hey! Where’s your milk?”
“Oh, I’m fine thanks—” René started to answer but Maggie shook her head.
“Nu-uh! You gots to drink your milk otherwise you won’t grow up big and strong! Meghan told me so. You gets a glass and you drink it up mister! I’m your sister now, so you bettah listen!”
“All right, all right.” René said, holding his hands up in surrender. “I’ll get a glass of milk.”
“A big glass!” Maggie snapped. René nodded and poured himself a large glass of milk to go with his sandwich. “Now drink it all up! All of it!” René looked skeptically at the tall glass he poured for himself and decided that it was best not to argue with her.
Lunch left René feeling a bit bloated so he decided to take things easy for a bit. “How about a movie?” He asked Maggie as he went through the tape rack above the TV. “What do you want to watch?”
“Luxray King!” Maggie squealed as she bounced on the couch cushions. René smiled as he put it on and then sat on the couch to relax. After about half an hour or so all the milk René had drank forced him to excuse himself. When he got back from answering the call of nature, he returned to find Maggie digging around in his backpack.
“What’re you looking for small fry?” He asked with a grin. It was soon wiped off his face when Maggie came up with a picture of Nicole Zuna, the nidorina girl from Team 16. His crush.
“Who’s she?” Maggie asked.
“She’s…a friend.” René answered. Even an eight year-old wasn’t that dumb.
“Oooooh, René’s gotta GIRLFRIEND.” She giggled. To his annoyance, René felt his face burn.
“It’s not like that.” He protested meekly. “She doesn’t like me like that.” That much, unfortunately, was true.
“But she does LIKE you right?” Maggie smiled as she waved the picture about. “I gotta tell Meghan and Floritt!”
“There’s nothing to TELL, she’s not my girlfriend.” René insisted. “Please give that back.”
“Nope! If you don’t LOOOVE her, then why do you care about her picture?” Maggie giggled. René smacked his hand against his forehead. Outwitted by an eight year-old!
Maggie turned and ran René’s picture still clutched in her hand. “Get back here!” René shouted as he chased her through the house. Being small and young, and thus full of energy, had its advantages. René soon lost her as Maggie hid. He went from room to room, searching for her.
He saved Meghan’s room for last. René didn’t want to violate his friend’s privacy…but on the other hand, he didn’t want her kid sister to violate HIS! René poked his head into the darkened room. The lights were off. “Maggie?” He called. “Are you in here? Come on out…this isn’t funny anymore!”
With a defeated sigh, René sat on the corner of Meghan’s bed. “Great.” All of a sudden, something from underneath the bed grabbed his ankle! With a surprised yelp, René leaped back onto the bed, falling on his back. When he raised his head he saw a short figure wearing a white bed-sheet standing at the edge of the bed.
“Boo!” Maggie shouted. “I scared you! I scared you!”
“You little terror!” René mock-growled as he grabbed Maggie and deposited her on the bed. Maggie fairly shrieked with laughter as he tore the sheet from off of her. “You sneak! What do you think you were—” René didn’t even see the pillow coming until it whapped him upside the head. “Oh no you didn’t…” He shouted. “No more Mr. Nice Babysitter!”
“Pillow fight!” Maggie squealed as she buffeted him with Meghan’s pillow. René grabbed another one and returned the favor. Jumping on the bed the two of them traded blows with pillows until they got too tired and exhausted to even lift them up anymore. It was René who gave up first, dropping his pillow and falling backwards on Meghan’s bed.
“I give up.” René said as he raised his hands in surrender. Maggie smacked him once more before she let go of her pillow too. “Ha. Beat you!” Maggie announced, sticking her tongue out in triumph before she fell backwards onto the bed too.
“You are DEFINITELY Meghan’s sister.” René moaned. Maggie yawned.
“I’m tired.” She said sleepily.
“Then why don’t you take a nap?” René asked softly.
“Mmm…hokay.” Maggie yawned. “Will you stay with me?”
“Of course kiddo.” René agreed as he fluffed her pillow and wrapped his arm around her. “Sleep-tight.”
“Nighty-night.” Maggie yawned as she snuggled up close to him, burying her face in his side. René smiled and after a while, he too, fell asleep still holding Maggie close.
A few hours later Meghan and her teammate Floritt Baez walked in the door. “What a workout!” Meghan commented as she dropped her bag inside the door. “I feel so stiff.”
“Mon ya got to try capoeira or at least yoga.” Floritt told her. “It really loosens a body up!”
“Hello! René? Meghan? You guys all right?” Meghan called as she started to take a look around. “I wonder where they are…” As she passed her room she paused and peaked inside. She grinned and whispered to Floritt, “Come over here and take a look at this!”
“Aww…” Floritt cooed. “That’s so cute, mon.” René and Maggie were curled up on Meghan’s bed, sleeping soundly. René had one arm around Maggie and was sucking his thumb.
Meghan tip-toed in and sat softly on the corner of her bed. Maggie stirred slightly, one eye fluttering open. “Hmmm? Meg?”
“Hi sweety.” Meghan smiled. “How was your day?” She kept her voice low, to keep from disturbing René.
“It was good!” Maggie whispered back. “We had a tea party, had lunch, watched a movie, and then I beat René up in a pillow fight!” Floritt gave a strangled snort of laughter from the doorway.
“The sounds like fun.” Meghan smiled. “Come on, let’s let René rest for a while. Sounds like you really tired him out.”
“You gonna let him crash in your room?” Floritt asked Meghan. She shrugged.
“Why not? He’s just sleeping.” As Meghan walked Maggie out, Maggie stopped. Without saying a word she dashed to her room and then back again, clutching René’s plush growlithe, Rosa and his book bag.
“I think he’d want someone to keep him company.” Maggie explained importantly to the two older girls as she placed Rosa in the crook of René’s arm. Then she paused to give him a good-night kiss. “’night René. Sweet dreams.” Meghan and Floritt had to cover their mouths as Maggie walked out, made a shushing noise, and headed off to the living room. When she was finally out of sight, the two older girls cracked up at the sight of the eight year-old girl babying her fifteen year-old babysitter!
“Come on, let’s go keep my sister company before she calls René’s house to let them know he’ll be back late.” Meghan chortled as she headed off. Floritt was about to follow when an idea suddenly struck her. Quickly making sure that no one was watching her, she slowly opened the door to Meghan’s room and tip-toed back in. After checking to see that René was still sleeping, she made her way over to Meghan’s dresser. Grabbing a few items, she walked back to René her eyes giving off an evil glint as she opened up the lipstick and leaned over René…
A few hours after THAT, René woke up. Feeling a bit groggy René rolled over and looked at the clock on Meghan’s bedside dresser. It was a quarter past seven. René’s eyes bolted open and sat up in bed. Hastily, he grabbed Rosa and his book bag and hurried out the door. He found Meghan, Maggie, and Floritt sitting in the kitchen having dinner.
Meghan started to look up when she heard René coming. “Hey sleepyhead. Want to join us for…dinner?” She gaped when she saw the results of Floritt’s artistic impetus: René was wearing bright red lipstick, blush, purple mascara, and eye-liner! Floritt had to lean over to hide her frantic giggles. Maggie too.
“Sorry, no time! I’m so late!” René moaned. “I was supposed to meet the others for a late night study session! I think they might’ve invited Nicole too! I gotta run! See ya!” With that René dashed out the door. For about three heartbeats after René left there was dead silence in the DeCinder household. Then the three of them immediately cracked up laughing and couldn’t stop until tears ran down their cheeks.
“Oh my…god.” Meghan laughed. “Floritt that was terrible!”
“Can he babysit again?” Maggie asked. “Pleeease?”
That just set them off again.

Rene: It never hurts to let it out a little more. I mean, I'd KILL for your body! Your so soft and snuggly looking! Though I think your taste in underwear needs improvement.
I mean, you had the strangest look on your face the other day in the locker room. I thought you had a monster wedgie or something.
