So I managed to snag one of these during last night's Black Friday midnight opening at the local GameStop. Got it with a buttload of trade-in credit.
The positives: well, look at it! IT'S GORGEOUS. The buttons on the inside are even lettered in gold! I mean COME ON.
The negatives: It's an expensive switch, in more ways than one. With no way to transfer any content from my existing 3DS, it means I lose out on everything I've done. Or purchased.
I don't mind restarting the Mii content (I had finished out all the puzzles and maxed out the coins, so it'll be fun to go through it again), but the fact that I can't re-download any of the eShop games I've purchased is a bummer. The biggest of all is the fact that the Ambassador program is system-specific... so I lose those as well.
Oh well. At least Whitney still has hers, so I'll still be able to play Metroid Fusion. It's still worth it. :3

I called them up specifically to ask about it, and the guy I got sounded like a high 18-year-old who was sick of answering this exact question. He even complained about having to "fill out the paperwork for the eighth time" because I had asked it.
Basically it treats the console like the customer instead of the player. Since it doesn't use account names for purchasing (even if you link it to a Club Nintendo account), it only saves the download to the system ID. They said they're working on a "limited software transfer" ability between two 3DS systems, but the guy on the phone today hinted that Nintendo wasn't planning on that functionality until the Wii U releases. So yeah, take from that what you will.

Nope. Tried that. Your Club Nintendo account isn't a purchase history. It essentially just registers the downloaded games automatically as if they were retail ones. The actual purchase history is tied to the 3DS serial, since you don't HAVE to have a Club account to buy from the eShop.
I'm still amazed how broken Nintendo's digital services are. That's my biggest beef with them right now.

wow! that so cool! i love the design of that 3DS! but well im an ambassador as well, so... well i think i would pass xP at least i have the special edition of skyward <3 i love it so much!

Cool, I got that too! Me and a buddy were in line outside for over an hour. There were three people ahead of us, but they were a group and there for XboX stuff. I traded in an older DS Lite to get the price knocked down. I had already gotten an identical DS Lite a month ago because the old one had problems with the top screen getting off color. The Game Stop I went to only had two of those and two of the Mario ones! My first Black Friday sale line and it felt good man.
Never got the idea behind this.... they promote a game for a system someone has to have, so they buy it, but then around the release of the game, they have a special collector version of said system, which would be sell out by the time some who just found out about it and is being horded for nearly twice as much on eBay...
