ant commissioned a second bust + background picture of his WW2 pilot character Lieutenant Corn, this time outside The Oak pub in Baginton, Warwickshire. Lovely pub. It's right next to Coventry airport and I can remember going there to watch airshows and displays when I was a kid, including the good old Spirtfire as featured in this customer's previous commission. I still go there occasionally for the pub grub meal deals, the dog-friendly policy, the friendly resident collie dogs and the kids' adventure playpark in the beer garden.
In talking to
ant about his previous commission I mentioned that I'd thought about going to Coventry Air Museum to get the right perspective on the Spitfire cockpit. It turned out that he's quite often up at the airport and visits The Oak often too.
In fact, on one sunday evening in early November, it turned out that we'd actually both been at the pub at the same time! Small world :D

Cheers! I tend to be pretty heavy-handed with colours and I tend to go overboard with shading depth/shadows. Light and airy-fairy just doesn't seem to be my style :D
It can be a shame though; some pictures would be better off with a less intense colouring job.
Sometimes it comes out looking a little too dark. Almost... black! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gZRZo4aX1Q&feature=related

I did use a reference pic for the oak's front, but it was a bit blurry. Then I got rid of the burglar alarm and the Christmas lights, put up a few hanging baskets and filled the flowerbed under the bay window. There's actually two 'spaces' between the words 'THE' and 'OAK' on the pub's frontage but that would have pushed the lettering behind Corn's antlers. Plus the dimpled glass panes aren't in exactly the right configuration... so it is recognisable, just with a lot of artistic license all over it!
It's The Oak Jim, but not as we know it! ;D
