Mostly they are summoned to help the summoners cause, beeing it fighting off a attacking ogre, defending something or slaying someone.
Summoned demons are just a shell of their real self as they cant pass through the worlds that easily, thus their insides are pitch black.
Basicaly once a demon is summoned a shell of it is created in the real world and the demon can speak and act through it while still beeing active in its own realm.
The people of the real world have also made it into a sport (think yugi-oh style), where summoners are to face eachother and defeat eachothers summons.
There is a unwritten rule though, that one is not to summon high lvl demons.
This is cause these demons often require payment, or they wont bother listening to the summoner.
The payment they often want is souls, human souls or souls from something superior.
High ranked demons can travel through the worlds/dimensions much easyer than the lower rank demons and are known to pass over to hunt and slaughter if they dident get their promised payment.
Low ranked demons rarely stand up for themselves as they are generaly scavengers in their own world, but still might chose to disobey should the summoner keep losing.
Middle ranked demons generally dont require payment either but wont just listen to anyone. Respect and knowledge about their species is required.
First time summoning a demon requires writing out runes on the floor/ground followed with chanting and a pray directed to the type demon one want to contact.
Once contact is gained its shell will manifest. Like anny person they all have names like you and i. Names will be shared and a contract between the demon and summer will be made, making it so that he/she dont summon a differnt demon each time.
