I can shed some light on this shadow, no pun intended.
The goo itself is simply a flesh eating residew left behind by the shadow as it follows you, making it as deadly as the shadow itself. We cannot see the Shadow physically and the only way to see where its been is through the goo left behind, the strange flesh eating goo that loves to troll you from behind.
Another theory is that the shadow uses this residew to "fast travel" to get to you quicker causing the physical trauma. Hope it helped and good work
