So I've had a few people ask if they can draw Zeek, and my answer is a resounding YES PLEASE. <3 I absolutely love to see how other people interpret my characters, though I do ask that you credit him back to me.
Then the next question is "Do you have a ref?" and now I do!
He's a shapeshifter, and really can be drawn in any form so long as all of his colours are present and he doesn't have any eyes. This is his natural shape, and this is how I usually draw him.
He's not much of a candidate for adult art, I'm afraid. He actually doesn't have a gender, or any genitalia. He reproduces asexually, by a process known as "budding", much like an air plant. The offspring grow as small, relatively neutral-coloured heads with long tails and a few leaves, rooted in the leaves on Zeek's back. After they get about the size of a grapefruit, they fall off and bury themselves halfway in the ground for shelter. They eat small things that happen to walk by until they grow limbs, then they uproot and become mobile. At which point they start to develop more vibrant colour and patterning, and grow relative to the amount of food they consume. They all look very different from Zeek and from each other when fully developed. I'll come up with a species ref at some point to better explain this process and the different mutations and localities. Once that ref is up, I'll make this an open species so everyone can create their own. :)
In the meantime... enjoy Zeek! ^^
Zeek belongs to me.

I would! Though I wouldn't be able to any time soon. I won't be taking any large commissions for probably the next 6-8 months. x_x
I may even do that just as a personal project, anyways. It just depends on whether or not I can find the time. I want to do a lot of stuff like that when I develop a species ref for these guys.

Thanks! I'm a fan of new races too, and FA seems to have a lot of them, but none that are plants. This may very well be the first sentient plant species on FA, for all I know. :P
Zeek is unintentionally sandworm-ish because of the stripes, but most of the species won't be so heavily striped as him, and so the rest should look a lot less "Tim Burton". ;)

I fave because someday I'd love a good challenge for drawing someone's character, especially one that has plantlike feeatures. In fact, the terrible plant geek in me can just imagine the joy of finding little zeek buds and going at them with scissors and a baggie...except he is somewhat creepy!
If you do draw him, link me so I can see! ^^
I want to draw a character like Zeek, from the same species, but based off of the Nepenthes I have in my room. I love that plant. <3
It would be really cool to find mobile plants. Even if they just crawled around a little, it would be really cool.

I was inspired by a little painted box I made, with a landscape inside of it that I made with really small found objects. I liked the colour scheme of the box, and the look of the landscape so much, that I had to come up with something that would live there. So I painted a really toothy, surreal looking face, and that painting is what became Zeek. His tongue was inspired by roots and dehydrated berries, and that was how I decided he was a plant, and it all just went from there. c:
What is your creation? :)

Something simple, that one :o http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6801633 as I said, simple but I realy love the design ^^ of my character
Hah... He really wasn't made with Tim Burton in mind. I'm actually not really a fan of most of his work, and while I did like the animated Beetlejuice series, that was made by a very different group of people. Zeek is actually based on a box sculpture I have in my room, that I made mostly out of found objects and paint. The box happened to have stripes on it, and that's how Zeek got his stripes. :P
Thank yoU!

Thanks! This is a really cool question. I don't often get questions with this much thought put in to them. <3
You're right, and all of them are the same when they first bud off, but they develop very differently according to their surroundings, experiences, and personal preferences. Because of that, no two look the same. They sort of... mutate over time. When Zeek was produced, he was equally plain and simple. On a genetic level, they are clones.
I suppose in theory you could get two identical plants, if they were subjected to the same experiences, in the same environment, and interpreted them the exact same way.

Oh gosh, I should have made one ages ago, really. I procrastinated a lot and spent most of my time on paid work instead. :P I still need to be working on paid commissions, but hopefully once those are done I can work on the species ref for these guys. c:
Link me to anything you do! I'd love to see what you come up with. :D

Thanks, man! Me too! :D I have a list of links to reference sheets for other monstery OCs on the internet. Every now and then when I get the time or I'm feeling a bit burnt out or uninspired, I sketch one. I haven't posted any yet, but hopefully in December sometime I'll put up a big sketchdump of all of them.
I just LOOOVVEE this character, idk if I've ever expressed that. every time I see him somewhere I click on it <3
and I really love the species idea. I love creatures that are different from the... relative "norm". Like budding. AWESUMZ.
OMGSH NAO MAYBE ILL SEE MOAR OF HIM :D :D :D
he's on my list of characters to draw when I get more free time XD

I keep seeing this character on your banners, and I've always liked the design. :D I don't normally do random giftart, but maybe if I need something else to draw sometime, I'll doodle you something! < /random creeper >
(Also, you say no gender, but use "he". I'm curious, do you just default to that for a pronoun to say or what?)

Thank you! :D If you do, that would be awesome and I'd love to see what you come up with. I actually sketch random OCs that belong to strangers on the internet when I'm feeling uninspired or I need to warm up for a commission, so I'm no less creepy. :B I'll probably post a bunch in a sketchdump when I get enough of them.
(I just refer to Zeek as a he because it seems more natural and personable than "it" but Zeek is definitely genderless, and doesn't understand the concept of gender or refer to himself at all. c: )

He's a lot like an african pitcher plant in the way he digests and absorbs food. c: ...and a bit like a fly trap in the early stages of life, before he developed limbs.
I wanted to come up with a character that was very much a plant, but that didn't look obviously like a plant.
