Temple Talk (Story in Desc)
The guard moved to stand closer to the doorway. One of her fellows was patrolling and a silent nod was enough to convince him to take a break and move on. The smell of rain was thick in the air and the soft sounds of the temple were muffled by its steady patter.
Kiviena nibbled daintily on a small loaf of bread the guard had given her. Supernatural creatures tended to have a natural grace to their actions and it made it hard to tell if she was eating the offered meal to be polite or if she genuinely was hungry. Her multiple tails shifted and moved in the pew where she sat, flowing like a gentle sea of water.
“I owe you an apology,” the guard finally said. “Every time something good happened people would exclaim, 'Praise Kiviena!', and whenever something bad happened they'd say, 'It was Kiviena's will'. I hated it.” She fidgeted with her robe and produced a cigarette and a sparker. The dampness of the air made her first attempts to light it fail, but finally the tip blazed to life. “We never met, but I hated you. I'm sorry about that.”
Another aspect many supernatural beings held was a calm patience. Perhaps it was an effect of a long life, or some serenity that having magic brings. The confession simply made Kivie smile and roll her shoulders. “You're not the first person that's taken a dislike to me, and you won't be the last.” She held the uneaten piece of bread as if hefting a goblet in someone's honor. “But you are one of the most hospitable.”
The guard smiled, one of her hands was cradled underneath her cigarette to catch any stray ash from scattering on the floor. “You're a little hard to hate now. Freezing and soaked and coming in here for refuge.” She took another drag, wisps of smoke curled from her teeth as she spoke. “You know most of the kitsune in town are from noble houses. Very well off. Seeing one of them that looks to be in bad sorts is unusual. It makes you stand out.”
Kiviena went back to eating. “Everybody has bad days, even the best of us.” The bread was simply made but also meant to be filling. It was probably baked by monks or priestesses. “At the very least, everybody needs to come in out of the rain once or twice in their lives.”
“If wasn't even as if the religion was particularly bad. No baby sacrifices or brimstone. They even helped spread education. You know, teaching every child in their care how to read and write. I had no reason to hate you other than the fact that you were their god.” She hissed the pale smoke out between her teeth. “I was angrier about gods back then. I've mellowed since then. Which is probably good considering I work in the temple of one.”
The blue furred vulpine glanced at the altar. “You found a god that you didn't hate?”
The guard smiled. “Yes, but not that one. They keep me because I don't pinch the coffers and I'm willing to kick out the drunks.” She shrugged and took another slow drag, finding some sort of solace in the smoke. “So what made you decide to stop acting like a deity?”
