A friend of mine bought a refurbished house, and for ages he couldn't figure out where an intermittent beep was coming from. Eventually he found a smoke detector sealed between a cabinet and a kitchen countertop. It was emitting the once-every-ten-minutes battery replacement noise. The previous owner must have treated the contractor badly.
