I remember my characters from the old Transformers Mush. Ballbuster was an unpopular autobot who was a crane with wrecking ball, and the personality of a borscht-belt comedian. Flounce was your typical hypermasculine fighting robot, who's vehicle form was a pink '57 chevy convertible. He was really embarrassed about that. Bothways was a male-looking robot, who transformed into a female-looking robot, and was mostly put together to point out how silly robots with gender were.
Oddly enough, there is, or was, an official version of Daft Punk's "One More Time" on Youtube, with aliens that looked almost exactly like the chubby little dude on the right. I never thought I'd actually find the anime, but thanks to you, now I have Interstella 5555 to look up, next time I'm in a mood.

Interstella 5555
Galaxy Express 999 and The Galaxy Railways
Space Pirate Captain Harlock
Space Battleship Yamato
Revel in arguably the single most recognizable design style in all Anime.
(an honest aside) Most of Matsumoto's establishing work comes from the 70s and early 80s. It's old, a classic look. Any ignorance can be partly excused, given the gulf of years. Like youngsters not knowing Episode 4: A New Hope was for years simply called Star Wars.
