After nearly having every molecule of his being burned into a wall and rendered little more than a permanent shadow, Russo struggles to make sense of his situation. Granted, being 'saved' from such a fate by being dragged down into an abyss and having the god of darkness toying with him isn't that much of an improvement.

Chapter 23
“Don’t go dying on me yet mortal,” the male voice stated in a tone of frustration as inky black tendrils wrapped themselves around Russo’s waist and gently shook him to and fro. The human found it increasingly difficult to keep his eyes open, that and being able to differentiate his immediate surroundings from the back of his eyelids.
“Where am…” Russo weakly trailed off as he struggled to take in his surroundings. His eyes slowly drifted from side to side. All he saw was a formless depthless darkness. “This place… it seems familiar.”
“It is where all souls come to rest, provided they aren’t stubborn enough to cling to the mortal realm. You made a passing visit here a short while ago, after a near brush with death.”
“You mean… my dream?”
“You’re not very lucid or talkative when you’re half-dead are you? Time to fix that.” Even in his wearied state, Russo shivered as he felt something slither up his spine and winced as he felt a pinching sensation in his back and shoulders. Tendrils burrowed their way into his flesh and slowly began pumping something into him as he felt his body begin to lighten.
“There we go,” The voice stated with smug satisfaction as Russo writhed amongst the tendrils. He craned his head back and was sickened by the sight of those things forcing their way into his flesh. He became unnerved by the fact that the only reason they were visible was because they directly contrasted against his flamboyantly colorful clothing in comparison. He shuddered at the thought of how many more of those things lay out in the abyss spread before him. With a chuckle, a massive set of fanged teeth appeared before Russo, curled into an unsettling Cheshire grin. Russo remained mum as his eyes went wide and he looked on fearfully at the apparition before him.
“W-what are you doing to me? What is there to talk about?” Russo stammered out.
“Come now, you really ought to be thanking me. I’m merely pumping compatible life blood back into you that I’ve… procured from other sources. You’re much more entertaining to me alive than dead, and I intend to keep you that way. And for conversation topics, there’s plenty. For starters, let’s talk about you stumbling into Light’s inner sanctum and not immediately dying. Pretty impressive human, I must admit.”
“Who?” Russo asked worriedly as he stared at the teeth before him. Every one of those fanged motherfuckers composing that creepy ass smile utterly dwarfed him in size.
“Ah it’s just a pet name I came up with for her. I’ll be honest, I was waffling for a while on whether or not to intervene in that little tiff of yours. Seeing to it that she never gets her way pleases me more than anything else. Yet there’s something captivating about watching hopelessly one sided fights as well. Keh, I digress, it all worked out in the end however. My lengthy indecision permitted me to see you grievously wounded AND afforded me the opportunity to deny her the thrill of the kill.” The teeth curled into a satisfied grin.
Russo narrowed his gaze as he glared at the teeth. The grin became more and more menacing in response. “Who the hell are you?” Russo quietly demanded.
“Ho ho, so now you’re in control of the conversation? You best be careful human, that arrogance might be your undoing.”
Russo grit his teeth as he looked down at the stump that remained of his left arm. The pain had subsided considerably ever since those… things began pumping him full of god knows what. He remained silent as his eyes drifted down towards his feet.
“No comeback? No stubborn defiance? That’s not like you at all,” the voice cooed. “Perhaps I’ll do you a kindness one of these days and answer your question. For now though, I’d suggest you listen to what I have to say.”
“Fine,” Russo begrudgingly consented.
“Smart boy. Let’s cut to the heart of the matter shall we?” A tendril slowly worked its way up along Russo’s back and gently wrapped itself around his neck. Every so often the tip of it would softly flick against his cheek. Russo winced as it trailed along his skin and locked his neck into place, forcing him to stare straight ahead.
“You amuse me, human. For the past few millennia I’ve contentedly sat back and watched you mortals go about your lives. Torn between virtue and vice, you are all such contradictory creatures! I relish that about you, it’s what makes you all so fun to observe. That free will in particular of yours is a crucial ingredient to what makes you all so damned pleasing to watch. Now, every so often I’ll come across a mortal that especially piques my interest. It’s been… what, a good two centuries or so since I last found someone worth interacting with? Nevertheless…” The voice trailed off as a tendril slowly flicked across Russo’s cheek. Russo shuddered at the feeling. “You,” a tendril tapped Russo on the forehead lightly as the voice spoke, “have simply captivated my attention! Facing off against demons, earning the ire of THE goddess of light, outwitting centuries old entities and befriending giants but only scratches the surface of your life’s tale! It’s been some time since I’ve been so enthralled with a mortal.”
“How… how do you know all of that?” Russo asked worriedly.
“I’m in possession of what you might call ‘conditional’ omnipresence.”
Russo opened his mouth to speak but no words came out.
“Now normally I take a strictly hands off approach to dealing with mortals, barring extremely specific circumstances. I’ve found that unduly interacting with your lives tends to have less than desirable effects. You mortals tend to react in fairly predictable ways given certain… stimuli, and it makes for some fairly droll entertainment seeing the same things play out over and over again. Trial and error has taught me better.”
“You-you’re casually referring to fucking with people’s lives-“
“In order to determine what yields the most entertaining outcome, the best ‘story’ if you will,” the voice proudly interjected.
Russo bit his lip as he glared at the teeth. “And I suppose I’m an exception then?”
“Now you’re catching on. Light is one of those extremely specific circumstances where I actually will interact with mortals. She’s a rather head strong individual and tends to force her will upon others.”
“Via white-hot person murdering rage and overwhelming holy magic. I noticed,” Russo bitterly replied.
The voice chuckled as the teeth curled up into a smile. “Nevertheless, Light’s preferred course of action runs directly counter to my policy of non-interaction. That and if she had her way you mortals would simply cease to be. And what kind of stories would there be to follow if there weren’t any characters left in them?”
“So the only reason you saved me was… because you wanted to continue to be entertained?”
“Precisely. Make no mistake, I have little love or endearing attachment for you mortals. Your continued presence is preferred to your absence only because it keeps me occupied and regales me. Presiding over a world scorched black is not my ideal way of spending an eternity.”
“…At least you keep hands off, or so you say anyway. Eternity… a god I guess?”
“It took you this long to figure out? I’m offended.” The voice said in a mocking facetious tone as the teeth curled downward.
“A god of darkness then?” Russo asked atonally as his mental faculties began piecing together the fairly obvious hints. The teeth curled back into a Cheshire smile in response. “Thought as much.”
“I’m not merely a god of darkness human, I am THE god of the darkness. There’s a significant difference between the two and you would do well to remember it. Hmm… perhaps I’ll actually explain it to you someday if…”
“If what?” Russo asked uneasily as the tendrils wrapped around his waist slowly drew him closer and closer towards the teeth.
“Hmmm… I am at a crossroads so to speak human. My hands-off policy has been completely undone due to your bumbling into Light’s domain and I am uncertain on how to proceed. Your life’s journey has been quite enrapturing thus far, saving you was necessary in order for it to continue to play out. Yet… now that I have interfered, I ponder the quality of your experiences from here on out.”
“You’re so fucking thoughtful,” Russo contemptuously replied.
“Perhaps I’ll try something new with you. I’ll invest in your life’s… ‘story’ so to speak, without unduly infringing upon that free will of yours and we’ll see where things go from there.”
“W-what do you mean by invest?” Russo asked fearfully.
“It could mean any number of things. For instance…” As the voice trailed off the tendril wrapped around Russo’s neck slid down and wrapped around Russo’s left shoulder. It snaked its way down to the burnt flesh at the end of Russo’s stump of an arm and burrowed its way in.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Russo screamed as he began writhing about, his stomach turning in knots just at the sight. Countless black vines… no veins extended forward from his seared remnant of an arm and slowly began conjoining and wrapping together to form basic muscles and bone. The mage grit his teeth and closed his eyes, unable to tolerate the sight and the horrendous feeling of having newly formed veins and muscles exposed to the open air.
“I rationalized that your newly acquired handicap would have had a negative impact on your performance from here on out, so I rectified the problem.” The pitch black musculature ceased growing as it waited for the forming bone structure to catch up. Slowly and agonizingly, skeletal fingers extended out from Russo’s forming wrist. The human’s body shook painfully as his mind reeled from the sensations. “And in exchange for allowing me to take a more active role in the story telling process… I’ll answer any questions you may have about me or the nature of the world. That is, when you catch me in a talkative mood.” Another tendril bolted out from the darkness and wrapped itself around the exposed muscles of Russo’s reformed arm. It dissolved and was absorbed into the flesh, slowly forming into a layer of skin that thankfully matched Russo’s natural skin color. A blackened ring remained where his arm had initially been seared off. “Hmm… and just so you don’t forget about the new dynamic in our relationship…” Russo screamed in pain as he felt a burning sensation upon his arm. A tiny ring of fire burst from the blackened flesh upon his arm. When the flame subsided, Russo saw that the image of a crescent moon had been branded upon him, the ring of black flesh intersecting the crescent in the middle. “Now you’ll always have something to remember me by…” The voice cooed as the teeth curled into a Cheshire grin and rotated 180 degrees.
“How clever…” Russo muttered as his chest heaved and he breathed heavily. Having an arm seared off, regrown, and then having his body violated by tendrils was taking its toll.
“That wraps things up for now human. Simply keep doing what you do and we shouldn’t have any problems.” The tendrils pulled Russo closer and closer to the teeth until he was nearly touching them. Russo was but a speck compared to those fanged monstrosities, each one was easily hundreds of feet tall and wide.
“W-what are you doing now?” The mage asked terrified as the teeth curled into a malicious grin. The monstrous maw before him opened wide. “No, no, no, no, no, no. Stop, stop, STOP!” he shrieked as the tendrils tossed him forward into the gaping expanse.
“Where could that fool have disappeared to?” Morgan looked around the main chamber in frustration, regretting ever having invited the human to tag along.
Tyridia ventured over to blocked passageway and eyed it warily. “He did mention he knew Blink spells right? Maybe he got bored and explored the blocked off parts of the temple?”
“At the very least he could’ve mentioned to us that he was going to venture deeper into the temple.” She sighed as her ears flicked underneath her white hood. “Tyr, think you could summon Xis? He might be able to help us sniff him out.”
“Alrighty, give me a sec.” The fox intently focused on gathering magic into the palm of his hand. Letting his thoughts melt away, Tyr focused solely on the feeling of magic condensing, the sensation causing the fur on his hand and fingers to tingle. He felt an intense flash of energy upon his snout and in an instant the gathered magic vanished. No sooner had it vanished when Tyr heard a certain kitsune yawning loudly into his ears.
“Thanks again for interrupting YET ANOTHER one of my naps little two-legger. You really do have impeccable timing for dragging me out here when it is most inconveniencing.”
Morgan looked on at the exchange unamused. “Are you even capable of not belittling or insulting him?”
“It’s okay Morgan, I’m used to it by now.”
“Hmph. So what childish motivations inclined you to summon me today?”
“Well, Xis, earlier today a human mage was travelling with us. His name is Russo.”
“Continue.”
“He came with us into the temple earlier and he sort of… disappeared while Morgan and I were offering up prayers.”
“Called forth to cover for your incompetence? How completely unexpected.” Xis noted in arrogant contempt.
“Could you help us look for him?” Morgan politely pleaded, attempting to deflect some of Xis’ criticism.
Xis slowly began padding towards the back wall, glancing up towards the sun engraving. He sniffed at the ground besides the pedestal and turned to look towards the collapsed passageway Tyr was standing by. “If you had any shred of common sense you would have realized…” Xis’ eyes darted back up towards the engraving upon the wall as he trailed off. “Both of you, retreat. NOW.”
“What do you-“ Tyr was cut off as the kitsune bounded over to him and flipped him onto his back. Fox in tow, Xis quickly raced towards the raccoon and shepherded her back towards the entrance. Shaking Tyridia off his back, Xis stood before the raccoon and fox, teeth bared and concentric eyes glowering at the wall. At the engraving’s center, a blot of darkness manifested itself and slowly grew in size.
“Xis… what is that?”
“I am uncertain. It’s scent and presence is most foul though.” The kitsune stood his ground and the tips of his four tails became consumed by purple flames.
“Aren’t you a perceptive little kit?” A male voice snickered, its laughter reverberating amongst the pillars. “At ease pup, I’m simply here to return what was lost.” A brown haired human came tumbling out of the portal and smacked into the ground hard.
“…Russo?” Tyr and Morgan stated together in confusion as they recognized the human splayed out upon the floor.
“Do try not to die, human.” The voice smugly replied as the dark portal disappeared. The raccoon and fox exchanged glances worriedly as they slowly approached Russo, Xis leading the way.
