Too Quiet Mate?
93 years ago today the War to end all wars ended. At the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month the guns fell silent.
The war was over.
Today we honor Veterans day to all members of the armed forces (Remembrance Day in Canada, England and Australia) for their services.
I decided to show a soddened Tommy, somehow relaxed at the lack of shooting, trying to calm down an understandably nervous Yank.
Many on both sides couldn't believe it was really over. But it was.

Well I know he was in the American Army. Now, I don't know if he was in the service from day one, or toward the end.
A few years later, when he was living in Richmond, California, he loaned his uniform to the city museum.
Guess what... they can't find it now - still listed as "on loan."

Ironically, the actual shooting didn't stop quite as schedualed, as various troops wanted to be the one to have fired the last of the war.
Though I did six years of service, and have no illusions of the "glamor" of actual combat, I sometimes wish I were closer to the pointy end of things. It would have been for the comradery, the mutual support, the "if I were there, mine would have been an extra set of hands to make the load a little lighter for the rest" sensibility. More than thirty years out, I still miss it.

I've got the diary my great grandfather kept throughout WWI as a member of the 77th, Statue of Liberty Brigade (also the original Lost Battalion", all the way up to the armistice. Since him, every generation of my family has served during a time of conflict including myself.
Well, the cessation of hostilities was what I meant by Surrender. The reason 11am was the time of the end was to destroy the German festival season Fasching, which begins on November 11th, at 11 am, and lasts until Shroud (AKA Fat) Tuesday. That point was pushed almost entirely by the French.
What a wonderful piece honoring this day. I always look forward to your "specials" and once again you deliver. Thank you for you hard work.
Don't know if you've ever seen this, but you might appreciate it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYlrrAWCTRg
It is one of my favorites and I always play it at this time of year.
