What did Warners do before printing it? Add a cartoon of Steven Spielberg?

A staff artist from the WB licensing department laid a tissue over it and made another drawing. Then a professional inker inked the new drawing. The finished ink drawing looked better than WB's pencil drawing, but it was still kind of weird.

You have to wonder why they bother... maybe it was just to justify some staff artist's job.

I was once employed to illustraste a novel by Rudy Rucker. He had a lot of amateurish sketches that needed to be made presentable. But the author skuttled all my initial pencils, and demanded I make no changes at all to his originals. So all the book ended up with was his crappy amateur drawings done with a less shaky hand. As it was the only job I ever got illustrasted a real book by a real author published by a mainstream name, it was a terrible let-down.

I was at least somewhat consoled by the publisher, who said they were helpless in the face of a writer who's "name" was too big for his own good, and that I'd handled the situation with professional diplomacy.

My paycheck was even more of a let down. It wasn't shabby, but broken down into a per drawing fee, it was only about a $100 each... and I won't even do fan commissions for much less than that.

Characters are unmistakable, great work. Sadly they don't make them like this anymore, not that I really watch cartoons anymore, but it's my impression the classics have been replaced at least partially.
