First off, I want to thank everyone who's ever taught anyone how to make a fur suit, because eventually, through convention panels, webpages and online videos, that knowledge got to me. Second, I put this thing together using bits and pieces I already had at home, the only thing I bought for this costume was the wig.
I wanted to make only a muzzle for this costume in order not to hinder my son's visibility while trick-or-treating, and this made it quite the challenge because I didn't have a head-shape to build my pattern on. Plus, getting an almost-seven-year-old to stand still with a half-done costume on his face so I could take measurements and pattern the fur is tantamount to torture, especially since he had received toys he really loved at his birthday party. I was ready to give up because things were not working right.
Then I stopped trying to sew the thing together and hot-glued the patterned fur right on, piece by piece, cutting and trimming where necessary. It's far from perfect, but it did the job. He loved that the mouth opened when he snarled at people, and when he realised some people were actually startled by that, he decided to use it. He'd ring the doorbell, sneak to the side, and then when the door was opened, he'd pounce in front of the door, snarling, teeth bared, claws out, giving the person a good boo-jump! This earned him (and his brother the Ninja Turtle) extra candy at many houses.
