lol the spoken language is far easier to learn than english, and the written kana (the simple 2-3 stroke symbols) is just like our alphabet (only kana stand for a syllable instead of a sound. you can usually spell a japanese kana with 2 latin letters, like 'ka' or 'do').
Kanji however (the complicated symbols that take a good several seconds to draw), are a massive bitch. They can mean whole words, they can mean whole sentences, they can mean only PART of a word, and their meanings change from sentence to sentence depending on where they're placed, which side of the word they're on (on-yomi or kun-yomi readings), and the context in which they're used.
...I'm focusing on the spoken language and kana symbols for now X3

lol yeah
Even the japanese themselves spend 6 full school years learning all the kanji they're expected to know. And that's just the official government kanji list (the japanese language is actually government-regulated) - the total number of kanji, including those for slang, metaphors, and regional dialects, exceeds the government list by nearly a factor of five. The language takes a few months to learn if you're a diligent student (I'm not). Learning how to properly use kanji, however, takes a lifetime.
