I am currently working on some shen artwork myself. I also have an idea for an AU Shen Returns sequel to Kung Fu Panda 2 that will flesh out Shen even more then he was in the film. Personally, I felt that Shen got shafted for Po being the hero. I believe that is one of the glaring flaws of the Kung Fu Panda films: The villains are all given sympathic backstories but so far none of them have been given much of a chance for redemption. First, Po ices Tai Lung with that wuxai finger hold ability and then in a way throws Shen under his own falling cannon. It kinda makes me wonder what fate awaits the villain of the upcoming 3rd film in this franchise.
