Well, APPARANTLY, the Buddha, Shakyamuni, was a rich boy before he went off to be a monk, so the earrings he wore then were so heavy with gold that they stretched his earlobes. The earlobes are a reminder of his past and how people should be like him and renounce riches and opulence like that.
