"Spontoon" = 'sponson' + 'pontoon' (both could be parts of early flying boats.)
There is an actual pole-arm weapon called a 'spontoon' that was in use in Europe up through the 1700s -- as a sign of rank sometimes for Sergeants.
There are echoes of 'spitoon' and 'spawn toons' tucked into the island name, too.
