Outside food's banned from the convention center, so we weren't able to eat the caramels until we were back in our hotel room. But they tasted so AMAZING...it makes me wonder what food tasted like before it was all processed and streamlined.

Sounds wonderful.
I too have known the joys of food prepared at monestaries.
There's this one in newfoundland I visited where the observe the "No meat on friday" rule and have made a small business out of it by opening their doors and selling freshly made Fish ad Chips every friday.
You wouldn't believe how delicious that fish was. I wound up asking the abbott if I could meet the chef who fried up the fish, and he took me to the kitchens wher I could see the old ironwork stoves and brick ovens that were heated with wood and coal. It was like being taken back in time, there was hardly anything idenifiably modern in there. The Abbott led me up to this rather jolly looking old Friar with deep laugh lines working with some large pots of boiling oil.
I asked if he was the Fish Friar but he shook his head and laughed "No young man. I am the Chip Monk."
