We came home from dinner to find the front door slightly open so we proceeded with caution. Mo Mo made her way to the bedroom and I went to the kitchen to make sure we were alone. As I was going to inform her the kitchen was trashed but otherwise okay she screamed. I bolted to the bedroom but I never made it there…
My next cognitive thought was waking up in a hospital room not in a bed but in the thresh hold of the door looking at him. He was by the empty bed in the room looking out the window with his back to me. Since my mind was groggy it took me a few seconds to place him but once it did fury rose from my belly; he was Mo Mo’s boss. He was a walking contradiction: suave but smug, handsome yet horrid, shimmering smile but ever so spiteful significations, and there were his eyes, portals that drew you in as though they are vortices that was whirling so fast you have no chance of coming out untouched. It was hard for anyone who did not know what a wretched person he is to not be affected but these “charms” of his but I knew better.
He casually turned towards me and greeted me, “Hello, Love. How are you this fine day?”
“Oh really? You are going to pretend you didn’t break into our house and that you didn’t cause this awful hangover?”
“Darling,” he said slowly, “do you really think that I, Deven, would stoop so low that I would break into your humble home? Now, just because I didn’t stop anyone from breaking into your home does not mean I am accountable, does it? That is like saying if you watch someone smoke it’s your fault they get cancer. If anything I saved you! When I found you, you were passed out on the floor almost drowding in your own drool. I brought you to this hospital and your Mo Mo.”
“Bullshit! Where is she?! We are leaving!” I am furious at him. I can’t believe how cocky he is.
“No,” he stated coolly, “you are not.”
“Wh…What?” I was dumb struck. “What are you talking about?! Of course I’m leaving! As soon as I find Mo Mo I’m out the door.”
“That is why you wont leave. You won’t find her. She has many people upset at her and a few are down right angry. This hospital’s entire staff is all the people who are mad at her.”
“She is a fighter!” I exclaimed. “She will never succumb to you willingly.”
“Yes, yes, yes, she’s a fighter but she can’t fight if she’s barely conscious. That’s right. Her blood sugar is being monitored so it doesn’t drop too low. Our optimum goal is to keep it between 50 and 65. Any lower and she is hyperglycemic, any higher and she is to feisty. So far she is being maintained quite well.”
“You are going to Kill HER!”
I advanced toward Deven and he started to laugh. As I wondered why two huge male orderlies came beside me and subdued me as though I were a rag doll just as I was about to pounce on Deven.
“Now, now, Love, we don’t want her to die before everyone has had their turn.”
I tried to kick him as he mocked me with his eyes but something bit my neck and I was out.
