Sketch sheet commission for
cerberusderozier of their character Azaroth J. Schrodinger-Fuchs. He works as a grim reaper, and is just generally gothy-looking and elaborate as a character. Plus, he's kind of quietly grumpy, which I love. I could draw surly characters all day.
It was kind of cool to get commissioned for a full sketch sheet, instead of the usual single character sketch. Sure, it's more work, but it's just so much fun. I always feel like I do my best work with pencil. ^^ I'd like to do more sketch commissions, and I have a few slots open right now if anyone is interested in pencil sketches!
Hope you like it! :D

Well if it's alright with
cerberusderozier who owns the character, and you give credit to me for the art that you are working from, I don't see any problem with you inking this. ^^ I'd like to see it when it's done though!

Actually he kind of gives off the 'cool guy' sort of character who gets all the chicks. Like he doesnt work too hard at it. That skull thing though, is that something he summons sort of?
Also speaking of the skull, let me be the first to say I think it's AWESOME. I've been playing around with skulls myself lately, and you hit a few things on the head with it that arent easy. Well you do teeth really well so that obviously carries over, but the eye sockets can be hard to make look right, and you brought it into your style so fluidly. There's tons of details elsewhere all over this page, but I have to say that I really like how you did the skull.

The skull thing was kind of like a very stylistic gothic interpretation of a soul. He's supposed to be a reaper, and since this was a commission where I was given a lot of space to toy with character concept, I felt like doing at least one sketch of him extracting a soul from something. I'm not sure if it totally comes across, but I wanted the skull to look a bit scared and reluctant, like anything might be if it found itself being separated from its body. So in a way, I guess he IS summoning it, but only in the sense that he's summoning it from a corpse. It's kind of an old-school interpretation of reaper-duties. :P
Skull anatomy is tough, because it's hard to just look at something and draw what it might look like as a skeleton. There's so much muscle and skin and tissue inbetween that has to be understood and mentally stripped away... For that particular skull, I didn't want it to look exactly like any animal seen in real life, so I used photos of different cat and monkey skulls as references, then simplified and stylized certain aspects to make it fit the image a bit better. It's supposed to be the skull of a fictional anthro character, so it can't look too realistic or no one will believe it. I'm glad you like the result! :D I collect skulls, so I also have a few around that I can use as props if I need to. Truth be told, I'd like to practice more with this kind of thing. ^^

It's hard to put emotion into a skull. I've played around a bit because I got a skull character, but Im still learning how to make it not look like crap first. You do have a great imagination though it sounds like just from how you tried to imagine, or create this.
I know I want to try and work some more with designing my skull guy a bit more as well.

Maaaan, I've wanted a skull-headed character for ages, and I've never actually designed one for myself. I've seen some really cool designs by other people though, and they make me all jealous~
Also, imagination is pretty much my only weapon in the fight against LIFE. Though some would argue that a creative mind is the only defense that anyone really has.
