Aibreann, the mother of my main character. She’s a mafia boss and both charming and demanding in equal measure. Her special talent is pure metallomancy, able to bend all forms of metal and their ores to her will without the silly restrictions that come with something so passé as magnetism - what most people mistake her ability for.
She’s not too fond of those without magical ability, and when her daughter Shuki exhibited the absence of such a gift Aibreann sent her to boarding school. 'Regular' humans bore her and she looks down on them, which may explain why the father of her child is a faerie, and she currently has a thing for a certain dragon.
The lineart was commissioned from Spearfrost, I coloured it. This character belongs to me.

Interesting character, and ability. A character I created and wrote random stories for in the past had the same ability, though I just dubbed him an earth mage though with specialization in metals. So I just called his ability Metallurgy after the science. Ahh it was fun writing stories for him and such, more for him than who I'd dub a main. Side characters can just be more fun than the leading star at points.
You're so right, side-characters certainly can have a charm and appeal all their own that the main figures lack. I've had this character for a while but only developed her thoroughly more recently and I adore her, she's so much fun to write. In a lot of ways she's kind of a villainish figure but that's half the fun, I think.
I always flesh out characters kinda at the beginning of creation. Like my metal user, he's a Mercenary who works with his twin sister. Though they are opposites, where he is bronze, she is pale, where he is silent and stoic, she is bubbly and light. Where he was an Earth Mage, she was an Air. Hmm...that part though I never really fleshed out where she gained the air affinity though. Since in their family were fire and earth inclined. But then again it all depends on what principle of magic you believe in. Where it is neutral and does not depend on blood and everyone can learn it regardless as long as they have the spark for magic, where it is affinity dependent and you cannot learn anything outside that field, or the one that is affinity inclined but you can branch out to other forms of magic as long as you try but it would not come as naturally to you. I don't know, I wrote from the perspective of all of them and other forms.
Rawr, enough rambling, either way yeah, villain-like, anti-heroes, dark-heroes, they tend to be more fun than law-abiding or neutral characters. Though I guess that depends how long you've been writing one side and if you liked your villains or not and whatnot.
