I am working on a Minecraft clone, mostly as programming exercise.
We are thinking about making some sort of dragon sim city with lair building.
Hur.
This is a very early version, but the code that makes the 3D geometry works flawlessly and fast, so that is good.
Now I just need to find out how to generate "realistic" terrain and add code that extends the terrain dynamically. Just a question of time, though. :P

Noone ever tests a game for testing purposes lol
Its basically a lie to say "I want to play your game, but in my defense I will say test when I really mean play"
I know this because I had tons of testers never test anything and run off with a highly incomplete idea.
Its good to be smart about who won't steal your stuff and who will actually test it :3

They can run off with whatever idea they want to, really. In the end it's how you implement your idea, not the idea itself.
Anyone can have big ideas.
I don't believe in copyrighting or otherwise owning ideas, it... seems awfully big-headed.
Even the best idea... was probably had by someone before, they just didn't get to implement it.
That is why I hate when companies create patents for the idea of doing something in a certain way and then suing anyone who happens to try to use the same idea, or being paranoid for their idea being stolen by someone who might actually do something better with it.

Do you have any idea what it means to make a game and work out the concept all in your mind and have to tell every person in the world what you are doing?
Its annoying, even I am developing a game and have to explain it to everyone.
Don't take it the wrong way though, I enjoy explaining it but when you are in development its annoying to have to answer every question when someone becomes a bit pissed off.

Looking through the comments, I cant take you seriously considering the contents of said moments. Besides would it really matter if someone played alot if minecraft? Its kind of creepy how you seem to be pretending to be artonis' bodyguard on every comment. Like... obsessed stalker creepy.
This is why I never, EVER tell a WoW (World of Warcraft) addict that they are just wasting their lives away :3
People are too defensive and quick to make excuses.
Its not my life nor do I care, but there is a line that is crossed into absurdity when it ruins or interferes with your life.
Stalker eh?
I can say the same to you, you check each and every post obviously... perhaps you are actually stalking someone?

really! wow singh me up for that :D what els can we make are self any way we want like i can be white dragon liveing the sky with fathers wings or big a ground dragon and live underground or a sea dragon living in a sea if soo I want to try that game... but wait is this free download when your guys done or do we have to buy the game?
Well... That isn't really a game using voxels. It stores its data as a threedimensional data set, but it still uses polygons to display, most likely with some sort of marching cubes algorythm that translates the scalar field into a polygon mesh. When I think voxels I really mean an actual engine using interpolated voxel elements.
Still, that is pretty awesome, but currently beyond my skill. XD

Voxels are actually power hungry and a bit on the heavy side.
Its important to actually know the basics of game development with polygons and structure, otherwise you will fail without a proper plan :3
I'm developing a game myself too but voxels are on the "heavy" side, the artist sticking with polygons and basic elements is what makes a successful game possible, you aren't worrying about the details but rather the concept and idea :3

Have you tried out Unity3D?
I am using it as my game engine of choice.
As a 3D artist using Unity3D (http://www.unity3d.com) I feel it takes away from the grind of setting up your own stuff and lets you focus on the important things like design and structure instead of building it all up from scratch :3
So far so good, are you 3D modeling stuff or just using primitives, using models from a downloaded source, etc?

The thing is, you don't have to build up everything from scratch, there is more than enough free middleware for all programming language.
Even for BlitzMax, there is enough free libraries for every possible use.
I'm sure Unity is a very nice tool for many people, but these development systems just don't do anything for me, I tried many, but only when I do pure programming I get anything done.
Maybe I will be looking into Unity some day, but first I want to get fluent in actual programming languages, like BlitzMax or later C.

Throwing this idea out there: since the player is a dragon, and quite feasibly of a burninating pedigree, a block that is a hut or a (growing?) stack that is a tall building. Treasure can be collected from these buildings to horde in your lair. (Gotta lure in takeout for those days you don't feel like getting dressed to go out to eat.)
I'm sure you'll get the terrain bit worked out. A few scaled and offset sine waves, multiplied together, and five or six landmark procedures and you'll be ready to go.

You know I'm all for this one! This is WAY more up my alley than previous ventures. I would essentially be permanently happy running around, digging dens, making chicks, hoarding stuff, rinse, cycle, repeat. It's kind of what I do in real life only I would look more badass.

i'm working on something similar myself. I'd like to get it set up as an environment for more serious multiplayer games. I'm at the terrain generation point as well, since mine is going to be very intertwined with an elemental axis system I designed for weapon upgrading I'm going to use a similar system to build terain with elemental influences(this area has high fire and air, so it will be a dessert plains sort of area). Ive got geometry, lighting, shadows, and block removal. I've also created a sectional system that only loads the terrain for areas that a player need worry about so as to make the jump to multiplayer smoother. I unfortunately started a new job in the last month and haven't had time to work on the project since XD
