Because what ELSE could she have possibly been testing for all that time???

There are two theories I wonder about GLaDOS.
The first is a more simple theory - that the personality GLaDOS is given is simply that of an OCD computer, constantly testing and retesting things over and over. Reaffirming 'her' belief that the tests do kill at a very high percentage, but a very small number eventually escape and disappear into the real world. She might change a few variables, then resume adding numbers to the stack. It's the same numbers, the same people perishing, the same tests over... and over... and over...
But it's all she knows, and she'll do that with a bored resignation for the rest of eternity.
The second theory wonders if she's looking for an answer. Kinda like how we humans always wonder what the point of life is, and strive for our own definition of success, GLaDOS is always testing and compiling data to find an answer. She's trapped in this facility, eternally trying to find out data for...something? Perhaps she doesn't know what. Perhaps she's just testing and testing until an answer blossoms out of the corpses and escaped test subjects. Perhaps, in the end, she's just trying to find out what it's all about.
...
Oh, uh, I guess I got some philosophy up in this piece. My bad! Picture's cute, Janus. =)

i kinda have a different theory- tho the end of Portal 2 might disprove it. i THINK they're trying to create another Gordon Freeman.
Of course now I gotta explain that i think Freeman is some kind of anomaly of chaos theory. He was not the smartest person in Black Mesa, not the the strongest, and not the most skilled. He was the one-in-a-million chance that no one saw coming! And he KEPT being that One on a consistent basis, thru numerous death traps!
Perhaps if you find that one person who survives, when hundreds of others die, that means something?
Kinda like what they were doing w/ the clones in Resident Evil 3.

Unless finding such a person would mark the end of testing. I don't think neurootoxin was on the testing agenda. What's the point of being immortal if your life's purpose is finite? GLaDOS would fight to keep testing forever.
Tho, killing subjects at the end of testing might just be here way of removing variables and keeping future tests nice and sterile. No doubt that's why she killed the science team. Filthy imperfect hoomans- messing w/ her research. X3
