So I made a journal not long ago asking if I should try doing toony eyes. The overall response was "Dunno. But why not try it?"
The background behind this! I wanted to commission a new toony Beetle head from someone but after looking through the options I realized that basically the only person I can trust to do it 'right' (right being what is in my head) is me. All artists put their own spins on things which is fine, but being an artist myself (in the exact same field) I have pretty detailed notions of what I like (that of course being my OWN spin). And this being my character, I've gotten pretty particular over the years about what her fursuit should look like. Plus, it seems a bit daft to run around in a suit that doesn't even advertise my own business XD
TL;DR: the only solution would be to remake my Toony Beetle head myself.
I decided to do it now rather than later so I can wear her around and test the idea before suggesting it as an option to my current customer queue.

The biggest thing I noticed was that it was not simply a matter of putting toony eyes in place of realistic ones like I imagined. I had to bulk out her face quite a bit in order to make them look right. which is okay for this character, but makes me hesitate a bit to offer toony version commissions as I would have to learn a whole new way to make heads in order to do it productively and I'm not really interested in doing that at this time.
vision is also quite a bit worse than my realistic heads as, although the mesh sees through wonderfully, the eyeholes are no longer in the right spots. I did my best to adjust but really there's only so much cross-eyed/thin-muzzled/bulb-headed I can make this head XD I did retain some tearduct vision though which helps immensely.
In addition to this head (which I will post on when finished of course), I still plan to refine the eyes and see if I can make them work for more realistically proportioned characters as well. Specifically a wolf.

I think it just take practive with how you shape tooney heads and place eyes! I can see perfectly out of the one's I make. Its just a different placement. I'm going to have the same problem as you, in reverse, with learning how to place mesh in a good spot for realistic heads!
I can't wait to see it though!

That's what I said/meant. Because you work with realistic your tooney eyes will be awkward to see out of- but If you were to work more with tooney it may become easier even with your prior desire of shape as you find ways to integrate them together :)
And like I said I will have trouble at first with realistic eyes/lining because my mind will still be referencing a tooney shape.

I'm really hot and cold about the eyes but I think part might just be that it seemed really strange at first being on a more realistic shape. When I started furring here they suddenly made a lot more sense but.. we'll see when I get into finishing and shaving XD If I give her a good smile they might work how I imagined after all.
Looks very nice!
I think
madefuryou could do a kickass beetle to be honest, just saying haha

One benefit of making toony heads is simply the experience of doing it, as you are discovering, adding another chapter of knowledge to draw from, just as you pushed your style envelope with Nip and Dig. Additionally, there is no better way to answer your own question about toony being a commission option, or not.
