If you're using Photoshop and exporting for web devices, use the adaptive pallette. Unfortunately, gif files can only hold 256 individual colours or 255 colours and transparency. Your best bet is to use dither or diffusion if you can. otherwise, I don't believe there is anything else you can do apart from using a lesser range of colours
