Not really. It allows you to fire a rifle while maintaining a proper cheek weld (pressing your cheek to the stock of the rifle, to keep your sighs lined up). It works out, provided you're right handed. Besides, if you were involved in a gas attack, I don't think the aesthetics of your gas mask would be of much concern.

If that's the case (which does make a lot of sense), d'you suppose they make "left-handed" gas masks?

I believe there are some that have reversible vent attachments. But I think the most obvious choice would simply be a mask with the canister on the front, like the Russian GP-5

Well, that would be the best idea, of course. Points for cost-effectiveness, but penalised on grounds of style.

Actually, it's not bad. The mask is pressed to your face, so it doesn't throw it off much at all. The off-balance-ness of it is really rather negligible.
