Raku is done with an outdoor kiln, usually fairly open (we have a simple one), we rarely if ever (I can't remember exactly) did it in beginning ceramics. But Raku is done by putting the still VERY hot pieces directly from the kiln into a pile of shredded paper and than covering it so that the smoke sets into the piece (you can see on this one where the clay turned black).
