The story is actually inspired from Sonic CD. Rather than Robotnik try and conner the world through time, Figured Kain, a dimensional being summoned accidentally by Robotnik, takes over by a coup de tat and uses Robotnik's technology to succeed where Robotnik failed: To destroy the freedom fighters. With the aid of Robotnik's invention, Hyper Metal Sonic, and harnessing the power of the emeralds, he is able to succeed. This scene takes place just after Knothole is ransacked by HM Sonic and Sally was kidnapped by HM Sonic. Aided by the dying words of Bunny Rabot, The heroes infiltrate Robotropolis where Kain was waiting for them at the control room. He has Sally in his clutches and is standing before a portal he created, a portal to a place where no life exists, The Void.
