As some of you may remember I have Paddington, my oldest and wisest friend. He'll be 24 come this Christmas. Today in the mail I received a Build a Bear i ordered out of their discount section.
I love teddybears.
I love candy corn.
I love sales.
I had to have him.
He came with a heartbeat box inside so when you hug him very tight, you can feel his soft thud... thud... thud throughout his body. They also packed him perfectly so he's just the right amount of huggable soft that I love. In a way, there was never a bear I was more meant to have.
Teddy bears keep us safe at night. They keep the monsters at bay. Paddington did that for me. I didn't have a monster in my closet. I didn't have a monster under the bed. I had a monster in the crack of my bed (between the mattress and the wall) Paddington slept between us. Any bad dreams I could wake up and hug him. I still do that when I have terrible dreams.
Danielle has a book about "Lovies" which is about the babys from seseme street and their dolls and plush and blankies. I think almost all of us had one. Those of you who didn't may have one now. One of the reason I make some cute plush for sale and custom plush is because everyone needs someone to protect them from bad dreams, from the nightmares.
Everyone needs someone.
Some of us need more than one.

Something I never really grew out of either. I still have a collection of beanie babies and I also have a coyote I got from Build-a-Bear (I'll be glad to show you a pic if you want to see). And yes they are a great comfort hehe. Also they've just always been fun. I have a stuffed animal that really is as old as I am, an Oliver toy from that Disney movie "Oliver and Company".
A few years ago I wrote a poem about what plushes mean to me.
Hearts of Plush
With hug so soft, the heart of plush
minds not the soft, incessant crush
of arms that hold it in times of fear,
and despite the flow of constant tears
it does not mind its soggy pelt,
this friend in deed with fur of felt.
When loneliness is best friends bane,
the heart of plush helps allay pain.
With generous spirit of velveteen,
it has no words either kind or mean.
Instead, its touch a soft caress
that helps recall happiness best.
These hearts of plush that know us best,
they help us pass life's hardest tests-
those that would teach us "Be unkind",
yet through them inside ourselves we find
a better answer than hates harsh crush-
for within we find our hearts of plush.
