A follow-up to http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5336072/ featuring the second race that features in the game I am planning.
It shouldn't take a lot of thought to deduce that the Balloh are partly inspired by
not-fun's Nikitaks, but again, I have done my best to make them a unique race and not a knock-off.
What I really wanted all along was a hexapedal race to appear alongside the Malgraan as allies. To that end, I wanted them to look somewhat similar but still be different. The similarities came from them having white fur and an animal-ish appearance, but they have six limbs and are much taller than the Malgraan.
I also deliberately designed them to contrast to the Malgraan on many levels. The Malgraan are herbivores, but the Balloh are carnivores. The two only overlap on a few non-meat animal byproducts (milk, eggs, honey, etc). The Malgraan are very technologically advanced, but the Balloh are technologically very primitive. Part of this is because they are users of Mysticism (the 'magic' of this game universe), and part of it is that their society has focused more on cultural advancement. When blizzards have a tendency to trap you inside your tent for extended periods of time, activities like painting, writing, sculpting, and the like become quite attractive. After they met the Malgraan and encountered technology, some of them ended up doing well for themselves as architects, actors, musicians, dectorators, and so on.
One final major design decision was to make them all hermaphrodites. I wanted to take a mature, very non-Furry approach to a hermaphroditic race (you'll notice their sexual organs are not larger than their limbs, for instance) to make it just simply a fact about the race, like being carnivorous or having six legs. They don't flaunt this fact around, it's not outwardly noticeable, and they aren't promiscuous, so I hope that everyone involved can handle this maturely.
In my notes I specified that they had "small eyes with large pupils", thinking of a dog or cat. Unfortunately when I first drew this it turned out to be SUGARCOATED ADORABLE and I had to adjust my drawing style a little to tone that down a bit.
As mentioned, they mostly rely on "Mysticism", manipulating spirits to produce supernatural effects. While most Balloh are capable of this, some of them are not for one reason or another, and depending on which clan they are part of they could be shunned for it.
There are three types of spirits; the Benevolent Spirits (they provide healing and light-based attacks), Malevolent Spirits (the most damaging ones that provide dark-based attacks), and Nature Spirits (subdivided into Fire, Thunder, and Wind). After the Balloh fragmented into clans long ago, each clan has trained and raised only a certain type of mystic from its residents.
They're one of the more interesting racial designs I've done, I feel, so I look forward to using them in the game.
